Conner has been a key part of the success of the football team this season. Golf to be added as a women’s varsity sport team runs record to 3-0 by Randy Capps sports editor Golf anyone? Beginning in the fall of 1998, women's golf will be added as a varsity sport to the GWU athletic program Throughout the nation, universities are struggling to meet the demands of Title IX, the law governing gender equity in athletics. The law states that there must be equal opportunities for both men and women to compete in athletics. At some universities, administrators are taking the easy way out to comply with the law. Instead of creating new opportunities for women, they simply eliminate men's sports. That's not the case at Gardner-Webb. Chuck Burch, vice president of athletics, understands the importance of meeting the Title IX guidelines the correct way. "Gender equity is a big issue for us right now. We have eight men's sports and six women's sports (women's golf would make seven) and in the next couple of years, we may add more," Burch said. Millie Keeter-Spangler has been named as the head coach of the new team, in addition to her current duties as coach of the men's golf team. Keeter-Spangler is a native of the area, and is an athlete of her own right, play ing four varsity sports during her years at Winthrop University. After college, Keeter-Spangler played golf professionally on the LPGA Tour for over 10 years. She is now a teaching professional. Keeter-Spangler is excited to be here at GWU. "It's great to be a part of such a fine school," Keeter-Spangler said. Title IX is also important to her "It's exciting to see the growth of Title IX and the new opportunities for women in athletics," Keeter-Spangler added. Women's golf is growing as a collegiate sport. Over 400 universities currently offer golf as a varsity sport for women. Locally, Presbyterian and Wingate are considering adding the sport as well. As coach of the team, Keeter-Spangler is anxious to get started. "I'm a highly competitive person and I love to compete," she said. by Randy Capps sports editor The rebuilding continues. The GWU fotball team used a balanced attack en route to a 53-28 rout of West Virginia State on Sept. 20. The win runs their record to 3-0 on the season. This marks the first time GWU has started a season 3-0 since 1987. Gardner-Webb put the pressure on the Yellow Jackets early with a 22-yard TD pass from Clint Conner to Robye DeWitt and two scoring runs by Ken Dawkins. At the end of the first quarter, GWU led 21-0. They never looked back. As has been the case all season, the Runnin' Bulldogs used a strong running attack as they ran up 323 yards. Amos Miles ran for 103 yards on just 10 carries, and CoCo Henderson and Charles Palmer combined for 24 carries and 152 yards. The Bulldog passing game was in high gear as well. Sophomore quarterback Clint Conner passed for 182 yards and was 12-18 with two touchdown passes and one interception on the night. The defense had its problems with WVS quarterback Varian Cunningham. Cunningham rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns in a losing effort for the Yellow Jackets. According to the coaching staff, fan support has been a key to the team's success this season. "When the students come out, it really helps our players," Coach Steve Patton said. Next week, the Bulldogs open confer ence play against Newberry. The Indians defeated GWU last season, 16-0. Coach Patton knows that this matchup will be a challenge. "They're a tough team, so I don't think we're going to intimidate them," Patton said. The South Atlantic Conference has several good teams in contention for the league title. And many now consider Gardner-Webb to be one of them. 1997 Gardner-Webb University Runnin' Bulldog Football Stats Team Stats GWU Qm First Downs/Avg 63/21 42/14 Rushing Att/Yards 140/686 115/435 Rushing Average 229 145 Yards Per Carry 4.9 3.78 Passing Com/Att 37/69 26/75 Passing Yards 437 273 Passing Average 146 91 Total Offense/Avg 1123/374 708/236 Individual Passing C. A brutal non-conference schedule and a rash of injuries have combined to leave the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 2-5 record. As the conference schedule heats up, Head Coach Tony Setzer remains positive. "I still think we can finish well in the conference. We're starting seven freshmen right now, so if we can get them some confidence, I think we'll be all right," Setzer said.
