Page 8 The Pilot / Sept. 26 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Spooky l\iesday comes to Gardner-Webb by Jenny Rogers arts & entertainment editor A mild indigo twilight falling, friends gathered outside the chapel, and a blast of Christian modem rocL... What could be better? Student Entertainment Association (SEA) and Christ Covenant Church sponsored a concert Sept. 23 featuring local band Dirt Poor Authority and the new Hawaii-based band Spooky Tuesday. "I believe the chapel was the perfect setting for the concert," said sophomore Ashley Abbott."Spooky Tuesday was cool, and they were a nice, refreshing change." The band, which recently released its new album "Happy Dissonance," consists of four members: Andrew Newnan, Kevin Penner, Jessica Treskon and Pepe. Spooky Tuesday's debut at a high school talent show looked grim when they lost to an Elvis impersonator, said Treskon. Fortunately for the band, their recorded demo impressed the studio owner. They were soon signed to his label. Innocent Media, which recently dissolved. Spooky Tuesday is currently negotiating with a new label. As for the strange band name, Treskon attributes it to dialogue from a "cheesy '60s horror flick." The message behind the band's music, however, is anything but trvial. "I heard ministry was the center of Spooky Tuesday's music, and I thought that devotion of that kind would be beneficial to our student body," said SEA chair Matt Elliott. "There's a music ministry for encouraging Christians ... and there's an equally if not more important ministry of music to the lost, which is more our gear," said Pepe. "It's not 'happy sunshine Jesus' music." Pep band enthusiastic about fall season by Nic Floyd staff writer Building school spirit, motivating the crowd and energizing the football team, these are the challenges that Gardner- Webb's pep band have enthusiastically accepted. Dr. Matt Whitfield, in his sixth year as band director said, "I want them to contribute to the spirit of the game and fire up the students, and at the same time, have fun." Whitfield believes keeping the crowd motived will be easier this year becauseof the football team's 3-0 record. To further insure that the crowd will stay interested in the game, the pep band will play upbeat popular songs like "Hang on Sloopy," "Louie Louie" and "Wild Thing." Although the pep band is excited about this year, they have some problems to overcome. With only 14 members, the band must figure out how it can get a big band sound that is clear and rhythmic. The band is also struggling with keeping correct timing. To increase the pep band size, Whit field encourages students to join by saying, "If you are a pep band member for two years, you can get paid for the second year." Another way Whitfield will try to i KAREN BROWIiK/statt Chad Hooker, John Wooten and Travis Bryan play "Louie Louie," at Saturday's home football game. The pep band is currently looking for new members. increase band size is by stepping up recruiting practices. By inviting juniors and seniors from local high schools to play with the pep band, Whitfield hopes that more students will take an interest in being a part of the band. "With practice, the band will get better," Whitfield said. Currently the band practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. With an energetic director and enthusiastic members, the pep band should have a productive year. Reaching for the Stars: Homecoming 1997 Student Entertainment Events :r7 Thursday, October 9 Concert on the Quad: Carl Cartee and Moriah O. % Double-Feature Movie Review by Matthew Miller contributing writer Last Wednesday night, I looked in my mailbox to see an orderly black-and- white handout on the Year of the Scholar film festival. I opened up the flier and heard Siskel and Ebert discussing the two movies listed on the handout. The B icicle Thief and The Icicle Thief. The Bicycle Thief is a 1948 production about a sad man struggling to make it in a harsh, cruel world. The movie's main characters are Antonio, the depressingly sad man who is subject to one bad incident that probably ruins his life; Maria, his wife who plays a minor part that still raises the audience's emotions; and Bruno, Antonio's and Maria's son who steals the show because of his comic acting and innocence. The film revolves around the extremely poor, post-World War II Rome and the incident of the bicycle larceny. With the bicycle stolen, Antonio and his family encounter a series of problems one after another. For example, the father loses his job and then looks for the stolen bicycle. This search culminates in the father's struggle between right and wrong. It is a riveting story of how a father and a son struggle to survive through a very trying time in their lives. The same can be said about The Icicle Thief. It is also a riveting story of a man's struggle to survive, but in a different sense. The man surviving in this film is the clumsy, awkward director of The Icicle Thief, who is invited to a television show in which the host and director discuss the movie as it goes on. Unfortunately, this does not go the way the director plans, and one chaotic, out- of-control event after another leads the audience down an extremely funny road. This is a very funny film with physical humor, and contrasts colorfully well to the black-and-white Bicycle Thief Seeing these movies in succession, the audience can appreciate the humor and sadness in both movies easily and effectively because the sad, depressing Bicycle Thief is complemented well with its funny, exaggerated spoof Although both films have subtitles, the audience forgets that fact after the first 30 minutes and becomes enthralled in the lives of such downtrodden and ridiculous characters. The Bicycle Thief is an excellent movie that makes the viewer appreciate what he/she always has had in life - Uke family or self-respect. The Icicle Thief is also an excellent movie because it allows the audience to appreciate the more serious movie it pokes fun at. It shows that life can get completely out of hand and still be fun.
