John Olsen Pilot staff The Gardner-Webb swim mers added two wins to their 15-win season record on Saturday, after competing against Catawba and Wingate ■^at home. Gardner-Webb scored a total of 105 points in the meet, easily handling Wingate (59 points) and Catawba (24 points) for their seventeenth win of the season. Katie Hoffman of Wingate won the 400-yard fly to start the day in 4:53.95. GWU swimmer Becky Henninger placed second in 4:59.66 fol lowed by teammate Megan Campbell. Cheryl Horne of GWU captured two victories, one in the 50-yard freestyle finishing in 25.59 with team mate Jessica Mischel finishing closely behind in 26.33. Horne also placed first in the 50-yard butterfly by edging past Deanne DeMattos of Catawba by one-tenth of sec ond in 28.05 to DeMattos’ 28.15. Gardner-Webb also cap tured fourth through seventh place in the 50 butterfly. After two events GWU led over Wingate and Catawba with 20 points to Wingate’s 15 points and Catawba’s two points. Wingate took the lead over Gardner-Webb 26-24 when Stephanie Reinshuttle out swam Erin Hyde of Catawba for the win in the 400-yard backstroke with a time of 4:39.25. Jennifer Bishop of GWU led the Bulldogs with a third place finish in the 400 backstroke with a time of 4:49.54. Katie Thrall placed fifth for Gardner-Webb. Henniger helped GWU capture the team victory over Wingate and Catawba with a win in the 50-yard breaststroke. Also competing in the 50 freestyle for GWU were Lisa Fry, Katie Alford and Kourtney Hamilton, placing second, third and fourth, respectively. Fry swam a 1:03.24 in the 100-yard individual medley to place first, with teammate Henniger placing second and teammate Jennifer Chester rounding out the top three. Fry continued her success with a victory in the 400 breast stroke. Hamilton of GWU placed second and Chester placed fourth. With only four events left in Bost Pool, Thrall earned a victory by 37 hundredths of a second over Catawba’s Hyde in the 50-yard backstroke in 30.50. Mischel placed third in the 50 backstroke, and Horne and Bishop of Gardner-Webb fin ished fourth and fifth, respec tively. Samantha Lehman of Gardner-Webb captured her only win of the day in the 400- yard freestyle with teammate Taylor Simpson placing sec ond. Crawford and senior Melissa Smith placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 400 freestyle. With one event left GWU had a comfortable lead with 88 points to Wingate’s 42 and Catawba’s 21. Smith led GWU by placing third in the last event of the day, the 800 individual medley, followed by teammates Lehman and Campbell. “This was a tough meet in the 800 IM, but team encour agement helps me to overcome each challenge,” said Smith. The Bulldogs lost a close match, 23-20 Wednesday to the Blue Devils. Mike Shade Pilot sports editor The Gardner-Webb wrestling team suf fered a heartbreaker last Wednesday, falling to Duke University in a close match, 23-20. The Bulldogs used strong victories by Erik Wince, Brent Blackwell, Jonathan Richard, Justin Lansley and Justin Gulliver to put a scare into the Blue Devils, but Duke found a way to edge by. Duke’s Mike Mitchell started out the match with a 22-4 technical decision victory over GWU grappler Michael Ard, pushing the Devils out in front 5-0. GWU struck back in the next match though, as Wince fought for a 2-0 decision over Duke’s Tim Marcantonio. Duke went up 9-3 in after Thomas Cass oust ed Michael Mays, but then GWU took con trol. Blackwell and Richard gave GWU the lead with back-to-back victories. Blackwell won in a 12-4 decision, while Richard ousted Duke’s Roy Williams for the contest’s only pin. GWU then had a 13-9 lead, the momen tum and the home crowd on their side. Unfortunately for Gardner-Webb, Josh Pniewski was disqualified in the next match, giving Duke a big six points. Duke’s Andy Soliman tacked on a 15-6 decision over Johnathan Neal to extend the Devils’ lead to 19-13. GWU fought back, with Lansley winning 5-3 in sudden death to cut the Duke lead to 3, but when Duke’s Brandon Foose scored an 11-1 major decision over John Cofer, GWU’s fate was sealed. Gulliver closed out the match with a 14-3 decision, but GWU still fell three points short. The Bulldogs will be at home Saturday.
