The Lance, October 9,1980 Page 7 Figurative painter exhibits at st. andrews Mary Diman, known for her figurative paintings and watercolors, will be exhibiting 25 small paintings through the month of October in the Vardell Gallery. Since receiving her MFA degree in painting at the University of Wiscon- sin-Madis(»i in 1979, her work and has been seen in three solo shows in Madiscm between 1974 and 1979. Bradley Award, the Memorial Union Purchase Award, and the Fanny Garver Cash Award, as well as first plae and juror’s recommendation for purchase at the “Watercolor Wisconsin” show in 1979 1979. Mary Diman’s work currently in volves painting genre scenes of con temporary life from snapshots, in relative proportions to the phots so that they seem exceedingly realistic and familiar. Titles include “Jim and Bob’s Bir- thday,” “Still Life with Hammer,” and “Finally Tied Up,” to name a few. Diman’s exhibtion is the first art show of the 1980-81 season at St. An drews. Monday at the arts By GAIL HUTCHISON Monday. The word chills the blood of every living person around the world. It is the day of moans, groans and procrastation. The nights need not be that way however. Monday Happenings in the arts is for the St. Andrews college student who may not want to start the week on a somber note. All activities ^bout to be mentioned start at 8:00 in the Vardell Building; no admission is charged. Main Street This week it’s another out-of-town restaurant. Sorry for those folks among you who don’t have cars, but unless you want a rash of out-of-town reviews at the end of the year, they have to be spaced out a little. There are a Umited number of eateries in Laurinburg. You understand, of course... A lot of you freshmen are from Charlotte, right? Well there’s a really nice new-age type restaurant in Charlotte. It goes by the name of, (are you ready?), “They laughed at Edison.” No, don’t laugh, because it’s a, well. . . it’s a kind of of a. . . oh, vegetarian cafeteria. Well, to satisfy you unbehevers I’ll tell you about the place. The menu includes quiche, Russian vegetable pie, stir fried vegetables, pocket bread, sandwiches, various salads and soups, sugarless desserts, teas and coffees. I have eaten the vegetable pie and the pocket bread; I have not tried the stir fried vegetables over rice as they were cooked ahead of time and I would expect them to be limp. Of course, I MARK ZINK could be wrong. I was however, substantially disappointed, with the cheese-cake. It was made with honey and carob, but had almost no cheese flavor. Each meal is served with delicious fresh-baked whole wheat bread. The bread is also on sale by the loaf for carry-out. Coffee refills are free. The atmosphere at “Edison’s” is very relaxed. There are a lot of browns and golds and the walls are decorated with several interesting weavings. Each table is appointed with Tamari (soy sauce for you barbarians), honey, and unrefined sugar. The prices are a little higher than at some restaurants of the same genre, but not painfully so. A good sized meal for two, with salads, runs around eight or ten dollars. Extras, of course, will run up the tab. All in all I would recommend “They laughed at Edison”, especially for a change of pace. If you get to Chariotte and are brave enough to try the stir fries, let me know how they are. Okay? Fall Semester 1980 September 15 Intolerance. D. W.
