Pages The Lance, October 9,1980 Knights drop two The Knights of St. Andrews dropped soccer games this week to Methodist and College of Charleston by scores of 2-1 and 3-0. The games against Methodist, at Methodist, was a tight contest. The Knights’ lone gojil was scored by Bob Beirbaum. The homecoming game against College d Charleston on Saturday was a sluggishly played game. Paul Dosal by MARK DRINNON and Dan Paracka were the igniting for ces, and both really hustled, but he Knights wre still held scoreless. College of CSiarlestOTi scored only a few minutes into the cwitest, and the Knights never got over it. Starting goalie Erif Lumas was hurt in the second half, and Brent Williams did a capable job as a backup. John Kreher was also injured in the second half. The Knights play at Greensboro College today at 4: GO. Coots improve By REVA BELLEW Last Monday, September 29, the St. Andrews volleyball team traveled to Bennett College to take on Bennett College and Meredith College. St. Andrews took the first game, against Bennett, 15-9. Bennett came back to win in the second and third games, 15-13,15-10. The loss was based on inconsistent playing. The ’“Coots” came back with team effort and downed Meredith College, 15- 6,15-5. Diana Pretz, Kathy Daniels and Malynda Young made impressive showings in these games. On Wednesday, October 1, the “Coots” faced Coker College and Presbyterian College at coker. They walked away with two easy wins. St. Andrews downed Presbyterian in the first game 15-4, then went on to win the match in the second game with a score of 15-8. In the second match, against coker College, thanks toi the excellent playing of Robyn DeRossa and Sabrina Kirk they triumphed 15-10,15-7. On Tuesday, October 7 they met Elon in a best 3 out of 5 match. Tonight they face NC Wesleyan at 7:00 on Harris Courts. NC Wesleyan is leading in their division. So, come out and support of the “Coots.” Cheerleaders chosen On Monday, September 15, the 1980-81 St. Andrews cheerleaders were chosen. They were chosen by the remaining cheerleaders, from last year, and the sponser, Nancy Smith. A large majority of the squad of 14 are new students. The cheerleaders are planning fund raising events such as: bake sales and car washes. The ping pong tournament was last week with the crown going to Lester Whitlington who beat Bob Bearce in the finals. Intramural tag football started this week and will go on for the next month with games on Monday and Wednesday at 6:00. The schedule for the rest of the year which is subject to change is Intramural soccer starting in November followed by Intramural ping pong, bowling and pool winter term. Spring term will offer basketball, volleyball, and softball. There may also be a Intramural run in the fall and spring and possibly a swim meet. Intramurals are for the student and only with the support of the students can they work. Any suggestions or ideas for Intramurals should be given to Jim Smith, Box 106. Knights beat Christopher Newport Saturday the cross country team of St. Andrews improved their record to 2-0 with a 30-25 win over Christopher Newport. Freshman Steve Dixon was the individual winner with a time of 26:10, seven seconds faster than second place finisher Mark Chase of Christopher Newport. The Knights claimed five of the top nine spots, with Keith Walling, Corey Ingold, George Anderson, and Jim Smith finishing fourth, fifth, sixth, and ninth, respectively. The score was a tight one, and Coach Floyd Blackwell commented that the team would have to improve, especially in depth. Kathy Henry continued her fine running as she eclipsed the five-mile By MARK DRINNON record for girls, which she already held. Her time of 31:11 topped her previous best. Coach Blackwell was very pleased with Kathy’s finish, and will enter her in the AlAW cross country meet in Raleigh. The rest of the girls on the team are rapidly improving, too, as two broke the forty minute mark. The next meet is tomorrow at 4:® against Francis Marion, and for tlie first time this year, the Knights go in as underdogs.
