(Photo by Jane Karpenske) By Sharon Frain Campus Life Editor The fall sports are coming to a close with the anticipation of the next season. Unfortunately, about a dozen key players won’t hear the roars of the notorious St. Andrews’ crowds next fall for they will be graduating in May.Theathletes graduating are; Tina Cheek, volleyball; Jennifer Dodgen, vdleybali; Melody Harrington, volleyball; Meg3nKleinbauer,vdleybaIl;JonH:Jk>way, soccer; Chris Koscho, soccer; Darren Sinopoli, soccer, Susanne Lusk, soccer, Susan Yeaman, soccer; Rob Woody ard, cross-country; and Eric Eubank, cross country. These players have all seen the triumphs, tribulations, and transitions of hisAier team and have shared the knowledge gained by these experiences. The team that will be most effected by graduation is volleyball with fourprominent players going out “into the real world”. During the past four years the team lost a much loved and skilled coach when Jo Ann Williams passed away. Tina, Mel, and Jennifer are the last of Williams’ recruits. Getting used to a new coaching technique is difficult with any team; yetfortunately, theplayershadexperience and skill to makeitthrough the transition. The spirit of the team and the respect of the other players, is what has held the Lady Knights together. The trust that any team strives to achieve was demonstrated toTina, Mel, and Jennifer their freshman year when they played Gallaudet College. Gallaudetis aschool for the deaf and playing them in vol leyball showed a level of trust each teammate had to have in the others’ skills for the usual yell for the ball could not be heard. Megan transfered two years ago and she has since seen the team working better together, with a better mesh of personality. All four of the athletes plan to continue volleyball recreationally or to even coach. Tina plans on developing in Scotland County a US VBA program and also plans on coaching. Mel also shared the desire to coach. With the loss of this many strong players on the volleyball team, hopefully some heavy recruiting will be done in order to lessen the inevitable shock of the loss of such talent. Participating in a sport can help one’s skill increase in other aspects of life. This is the case with the seniors on the woman’s soccer team. Susanne Lusk usually plays basketball and softball but this year she decided to add a third sport to her experience in the form of soccer. Susan Yeaman, a very talented equestrian, also decided to play soccer to supplement her riding. Susan felt that soccer helped her develop a team attitude that is hard to find in riding which is more an individualistic sport. Soccer, to Susan, was more for enter tainment while riding has stayed her main sport. Susanne Lusk found her first year on the soccer team very bene ficial for it kept her in shape for all the running she’ll start to experience now during basketball season. Eric Eubank has been running cross country since he was a sophomore in high school. His determination has played avery dominantrole for the team. Though the cross-country team has gotten smaller during his four years here, there seems to be more talented individuals. Con trary to popular opinion, cross-country is a very team-oriented sport where everyone helps each other out. This team spirit has nurtured great friend ships among the runners and according to Eric this is what he’ll miss the most upon graduating. Though Eric plans to take a little haitus from running, he still plans to get back into it one day. Jon Holloway, Chris Koscho, and Darren Sinopoli have all been instru mental in changing the face of the soc cer team - from a soccer team with a lot of heart to a powerhouse in the confer ence. The four year span that Holloway and Koscho have been a part of has seen skill, communication, team unity, pers- erverance, and level of potential all increase due to a bigger push in recruit ing. In just the two years that Darren has been here he has seen a positive change in everyone picking up the slack and the expanding of recruiting territories with possibly more Trinidadians and even a South African player. The direc tion of the team will keep going posi tive, Jon feels, if the team all pulls together for a common goal and unites. When asked abouthis mostmemorable game Chris recalled the indoor tourna ment freshman year. St. Andrews was the underdog yet we won, with Chris scoring the winning goal. Another fond memory for Chris was when he made All-Tournament last year. Jon added a touchofhumcrtothequestion by answering that he would always anticipate the Warren Wilson game because in all of his years here that is the team he always scored against. Holloway plans to continue to play on a recreational basis while Koscho has dreams of maybe going into the Amateur League. ' | The group of graduating athletes is one of talent and skill. They will surely be missed not only fpr their talent but also for their leadership abilities on and off the field. Hopefully, the future of S t. Andrews’ teams will be a positive re flection on what these seniors have contributed to his/her sport.
