McVoy Wins Chapbook Sports Terra Elan McVoy is the an nual winner for the Bunn- McClelland Chapbook-the only award of its kind in the nation to be offered at the college level. Her volume, a combination of poetry and prose, has been published by the St . Andrews Press. Selections from'The Table Beneath the Hand" were read at Fortner Writers' Forum on May 4 in the Bushoven Lounge of Mecklenburg. "My primary source is the sensual world," says McVoy of her work,"and the people who are close to me-that's where I draw a great deal of my images from, as well as human emotions." When asked about her influences she replied. "Dickinson, because she plays with style and because she had to struggle with who she was. William Carlos Williams because he'ssopure. Faulkner and Salinger for their realism; they taught me that people don't have to talk pretty all the time." "The Table Beneath the Hand" deals with the tension between being assertive and sensitive, and the conflicting emotions that tend to arise for a young woman growing up in today's world. Her new found fame is having an effect says McVoy, "I realize how great the awardis and it makes me feel more humble. I would love it more if people got something out of my work. This is my fifteen minutes." Baseball You Could Fill This Space! Join The Lance (or yearbook) Next Year! Sign Up For Com. 183, Or Just Volunteer! Fusion (Continued) Later Ray discussed the importance of keeping ideas "out there" and available for anyone who wanted to encounter them. He considered"Cerebral Fusion" as alearning ground: a place where ideas could come together and be presented in an unbiased manner. If you have writings of any type which you would like to share, you can get them to Ray and/or his current "Fusion" partner, Stephen Moody, via box 5642.
