6 Student Life “I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire North By Northeast Communication major Jeremy Weiss and his professor/advisor Richard Brett have been busy this past summer and fall, struggling in remote locations to complete films which will premier at a special double-feature at St. Andrews this spring. Both filmmakers shot their projects on Canon Mini-DV professional camcorders, weighing less than 5 pounds each, but rendering high-quality digital video footage. The relative portability of such equipment allowed Weiss and Brett to travel far a field of the St. Andrews campus, in search of subjects and images that one doesn’t readily encounter in North Carolina. Jeremy Weiss Jilming. Picture courtesy of Richard Brett. Weiss shot his 17 min&te drama Bad Company on location, and mostly at night, on the mean streets of New Jersey, while Brett utilized his class of travel-abroad students, as well as local inhabitants, to produce Prival, an hour-long drama/ thriller set amidst the lavish scenery of Brunnenburg Castle in northern Italy. Bad Company fol lows a young street tough, Lou Francesa, on a nightmarish odyssey to free himself from his criminal past, and save a loved one who may die because of his actions. In PRIVAT, Dr. Nathaniel Lugner has grave misgivings about taking a group of college students abroad. Ultimately he must confront the darker side of h uman nature, and himself, when his worst fears are realized. “Both films concern people trying to endure under dire circumstances” said Brett. “And both, as so many films often are, were made under somewhat dire circumstances.” Weiss added “The biggest challenge both of us faced was time. We both had these great stories we wanted to tell, and things we wanted to show viewers...but the clock was always ticking. And the unexpected was always banging at the door.” Both Brett and Weiss feel, however, that the multitude of challenges in making both projects have imbued each with a sense of energy which is often lacking in many features cranked out of studios in today’s industry. “I think desperation often fuels creativity” said Brett. Weiss agreed: “We both had to come up with some pretty creative solutions to problems. And some of those results may have been even better than what we originally planned.” “We suffered for these films” said Brett, “but that’s part of the process. And I know both of us are hoping the audience will enjoy what we've fought to put up there on the screen. I guess we’ll find out soon.” Bad Company and PRIVAT will premier at the Morris Morgan Theatre on Tuesday, April 24, at 7;00pm. Admission is free.
