THE COMPASS #••••«» I;® October 1977 A scene from Broadway’s hottest smash hit family musical, “Bubbling Brown Sugar” with music by Eubie Blake, Duke Ellington. Billie Holliday, and Cab Calloway. Brown Sugor Performed Here By (^iary Rodgers As you all have heard by now, the Broadway musical “Bubbling Brown Sugar” was on campus September 5,1977. It was the winner of the 1977 Grammy Award. Josphine Pcemice, Joseph Attles, and Avon Long were the main performers in the musical. Bubbling Brown Sugar has set attendance records all over the country and has audiences singing its praises along with critics everywhere. There was music from the thirties and forties, including “Sweet Georgia Brown, Harlem makes me feel, and Pray for the lights to go out.” Some of ^ our modern day songs were ^ sung, “Sophisticated Lady, It Don’t Mean a Thing, and Solitude.” This Broadway musical staged scenes on some of New York popular streets, such as Lenox Avenue, 125th Street, and 135th Street. It turned out to be a very rewarding ex perience for those that showed up. This exciting show was one of the highlights of the ECSU Choir tour. Everyone enjoyed the musical very much. The Record Rap By William Hartley Kraftwesh (“Trans-Europe Express”) AU aboard for the most unique trip in music history. This trip is on the Trans- Europe Express. Hailing frorn Dusseldoy, West Ger many; Kraftwesh is again making musical history with Classical Music turned funky. The percussion and syn thesizer arrangement on the title cul^ is excellent. Cuts to listen; Europe Endless, Fraz Schubert, Metalon Metal Brick-(“Brick”) Once again this group is out with yet another album, This one is titled (“Brick”), which is much like the last album (“Good High”). Arrangement and duplicated sound from the (“Good High”) goes into this one. With group leader Jimmy “Fond” Brown playing four instruments and he also displays his song writing ability. This album is ex pected to go well. Cut to listen: Happy, Honey Chile, Ain’t Goima Hurt Nobody Rose Royce (“In Full Bloom”) When you talk about records producer, writer, and arranger, one name should enter your mind im mediately. (Norman Whitefield) Creator of the soundtrack from the motion picture “Car Wash”. Whitefield is the man with the plan. But, lets not forget about Rose Royce, then music speaks for itself. Their second product from Whitefield Records is destined to turn gold. The album contains lovely ballads, mellow moods of romance, and party music. Cut to listen: Wishing on a Star, Ooh Boy, Do you Dan, It makes you feel like Dancing Ralph McDonald (“Sound of a Drum”) I‘m sure if you’ve been reading the credits on albums you have been noticing the name Ralph McDonald. For example, this percussionist has performed with artists such as: The Brother Johnson, Groven Washington Jr., Quincy Jones, and etc. Now McDonald is off on his own with his newest, (“Sound of a Drum”). Strictly Jazz or roughly spaking, Con temporary Jazz with a mixture of Rhythm and Blues. With help from such Jazz greats as: Bob James, Eric Gale, and Grover Washington, Jr., this album is expected to do good. Cut to listen: Mister Magic, Jam on the Groove, Sound of a Drum Brother to Brother (“Shades and Creation”) It took a year in the making, but the wait is over. Brother to Brother is back, with “Shades and Creation” and the mood of this album is soft and sultry, with the touch of the boogie. Brother to Brother is unique in this type of music. So, prepare for a nice and mellow trip of music with Brother to Brother. Cut to listen: Vibration, Pray, Shades and Creation. Album of the Month Idris Muhammad (“Turn this Mutha Out”), is a man of many talents. He is very impressive with his first album. His music is a mix ture of Jazz, Rythem and Blues, Rock-n-Roll, and Soul; Idris Muhammad is making a name for himself in terms of Contempory Jazz great. Cut to listen: Tasty Cokes, Could Heaven ever be like this, Moon Hymn. Test Schedule For Year According to the ECSU Counseling Center, the following tests will be ad- ministerd during the current academic year. The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and Achievement Tests - November 5, 1977, December 3, 1977, May 6, 1978, and June 3,tl978 The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) - November 5, 1977 The Graduate Record Examination (GRE, which contains a section designed to measure analytical ability) - December 10, 1977 The Law School Admission 'Test (LSAT) - October 8,1977 The National Teacher Examination (NTE, on which North Carolina requires a composite score of 950 for certification) - November 12, 1977, February 18, 1978, and July 15, 1978 The Miller Analogies Test (MAT) and the College Level Placement Tests (CLEP) are arranged on an individual basis, with the CLEP Tests being administered during the third week of each month Additional information on these and other tests, as well as application forms may be secured by contacting the Director of the ECSU Guidance and Testing Center, Room 102, Student Services Building, or by calling 335- 0551 extension 242. New Freshman Officers By Lillie M. Vaughan The newly elected officers for the Freshmen class are as follows: President, Janice Long Vice-Pres., (jeneva Simpson Secretary, Faye Jackson Treasurer, Lorraine Massenburg; and Miss Freshman, Solneather McQueen. This years’ freshmen class has a deep belief that these people can really represent them and get the job done. One student was quoted as saying: “This class will l»e the best Elizabeth City State University has ever had.” With high beliefs like these, it seems the freshmen Class 1977-78 are anticipating on doing things.
