Parking will be available on the campus. By MICHAEL FAIRLEY On Thursday, April 5, the Elizabeth City State University Collegians gave a concert in observance of “National Music In Our Schools Week. The first synchronized celebration of this event was held May 4-10, 1924, under the guidance of Charles M. Tremaine. Since 1924, when President Calvin Coolidge served as the first Honorary Chairman, each of our nation’s Chief Executives has given his moral support to the annual observance to this event. The ECSU Collegians Stage Band was formally organized by the Music Department in 1965 to provide experiences for those students interested in performing jazz for listening and dance audiences. Membership has always been open to all students who qualify, subject to audition by the director, with the average size of the group being a maximum of 18 players. Under the direction ot Assistant Professor Robert Thomas, the group is con sidered a “Lab Group”. In addition to reading and studying contemporary charts and pieces, jazz, rock and pop music of all styles are undertaken in ensembles of varying sizes and in strumentation with emphasis on improvisation. The Collegians featured James (Fox) Gardner and William(Bird) Johnson on a variation and theme for percussion entitled, “The Fox chases the Bird”. Dance drumming expertise were showcased to an enthusiastic audience. Students from Trigg Elementary School were brought to the per formance and they bubbled with excitement until the last note was sounded. The students were allowed to examine the various in struments and this really accented their attendance. Professor Thomas is a firm believer in expression through performance. Bringing the spirit to flesh musically is what this week is all about. The Elizabeth City State University’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed in Moore Hall Auditorium, April 29 for their spring concert. By MICHAEL FAIRLEY The first blade of new grass has peered its head above the melting soil. Snow has dissolved and the ground is transform ed into an exhibit of life. Trees, which have stood with their barren limbs towards the heavens are revived with the promise of new Rites of Spring leaves. Frosty mornings are no more. Automobiles no longer cry and whine because the wind has lowered their body temperature. Places made dull by winter are now colorful. Empty bottles are lined up in the parking lots. They prove ideal targets for unsuspecting motorists. Library halls are silent; as still as the morgue. Nature’s magnetism has drawn the masses in to the basking sunshine. Outdoor dining has come of age and the lawn suf fers. Paper bags fall prey to the hungry blade of a mower with this transfiguration of seasons. Or have all these manifestations been hid den beneath the ice, waiting for someone to release them. Classrooms are no longer filled to their maximum capacity. The fever is upon us; that mystical allurment which draws one into its realm of speculation. Tem peratures dictate change and four walls can no longer contain a wander ing mind. Senior sprinter, Lawrence Lee is a participant of the ECSU Invitational Track Meet held on April 28. m ECSU teammates edge their opponents in the 88d-ya.‘relay'.
