W alton is the key By BERNADETTE CARVER Staff writer The clock was ticking away and the Vikings were down by three points. The pass of the game was thrown and it was all over. The Vikings scored and took the game, gaining a 20-16 victory over Hampton Institute. There was victory in the air. Johnny Walton is the force which led the Viking’s to this victory and others like it. The Viking team has come a long way in the past months with the skills of Coach Walton. One student stated that the team will have a chance to win the CIAA tournament with the help of Walton. Many students and faculty members have positive thoughts about the coach’s skills and work. Ted Stevenson, a starting punter for the Vikings said the team could do better under Walton. Another player said that Walton is “a con cerned and very smart coach.” He said the practices are hard, but bring results. Maryland Bright, another player, said “Walton is a fine coach and he’s the one we needed all the time.” “The guys have disciplined themselves more now since the coach is serious about football and the players are taking it seriously. The team is very much pleased with the coach,” Bright said. “Nothing can tdl what the future might be like.” Johnny Walton stated that he feels good coaching and the practicing is showing progress. Recently, Walton was named CIAA coach of the week and it is an honor well deserved. The team practices every day during the week, from four until six. When Walton was asked why he left the Eagles, one of his reasons was family stability. Another reason was that he practiced and worked hard all week, but he didn’t get the opportunity to release his tension. “But that’s the set of sports,” he added. The coach feels that through his coaching there are some players that will have a chance to make the pros like he did. Walton said that he regretted not playing pro-ball only when he is watching a game, and then it only crosses his mind.
