Organizational News SNA Elects President Congratulations to Larry G. Alley, a sophomore nursing student, who was recently elected president of the Student Nurses’ Association of North Carolina. This is the first time the association has been represented by a student from Winston-Salem State University and it is also the first time in the history of the Student Nurses’ Association that a male has been elected to this post. Mr. Alley, along with ap proximately another thirty WSSU nursing students, will represent the university at the National Student Nurses’ Convention to be held April 26-30,1978 at St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Alley and his wife Cindy, w^o is also a Registered Nurse, reside at 941 Lockland Avenue in Winston-Salem. Prior to entering the nursing program at WSSU, iie earned a BA degree in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mr. Alley states that he feels there is a need for more men in the nursing profession. His ultimate goal is hospital ad ministration. Some of the goals and ob jectives Mr. Alley would like to achieve during his tenure as president of the association in clude a greater emphasis on active participation of all members of the SNA, as well as to promote a stronger recruit ment program. Student nurses recognize that the nursing profession, largest of the health professions in North Carolina, is experiencing the impact of ad vanced scientific and technological knowledge. Recent changes in the delivery of health care systems, along with changing patterns of health and illness of population groups, has increased the demand for ac countability for the cost and quality of health cart services. Because of these changing trends, student nurses recognize the importance of adequately preparing the professional nurse to give skilled humanistic care before she is licensed. Mr. Alley also stated the SNA is actively supporting the current trend of nursing education at the baccalaureate level. They have recognized the need to provide appropriate learning op portunities for the registered nurse student, who is a graduate of the diploma program (three year hospital based) and the' associate degree progrjun (two year technical institute or conmiunity college based), who desires to earn a baccalaureat degree in nursing. A position statement on legislation to facilitate baccalaureate education for the Registered Nurse was adopted by the House of Delegates in October, 1977. Other resolutions passed by the Student Nurses’ Association of North Carolina in February, 1978 include support of the Governor’s Statement RE; immunization of school-age children and druge abuse education in the public schools. The association is also supporting the North Carolina State Nurses’ Association efforts to increase the number of nurses serving on health decision making committees such as the Professional Standards Review Organization. Data Processing Management Association The Data Processing Management Association student organization program was started in 1968 to provide a means of encouraging college and university students who are in terested in the field of data processing. Through the program, DPMA seeks to provide additional opportunities for students to learn more about their chosen area of study as well as promoting interaction between students and professionals in data processing. As a member of DPMA, each student receives a monthly magazine, Uata Management. Monthly, DPMA recognizes a member that has made an out- History and Facts Big Brother, Big Sister The Big Brother, Big Sister program stated in September 1976, under the leadership of Ms; Hazel Mack, Student Govern ment Association President. A committee was formed from interested students to organize the program to be offered to the student body and the community. Ms. Wanda Scott was elected chairman of this committee. The objective of this program was to integrate the student body of WSSU with the conununity and to help motivate our youth towards higher education and instill a stronger sense of pride for their Black identity. The program was very much a success during its first year. Programs were designed around holidays and special occasions and in areas of difficulty for the child in the educational arena. We were able to establish personal relation ships with the children which made it more of a family affair. The children range in age from 5 to 14 and come from all economic backgrounds. Big Brother, Big Sister meets every Saturday from 9:30 - 11:30 in the Student Union Ballroom. Transportation is provided for the children. The organizations colors are black and red, the symbol is a hand and their songs are the “Black National Anthem” and “Reach Out and Touch Somebody’s Hand. Big Brother, Big Sister is a volunteer organization composed of all majors and classifications. It’s a very good program and it can continue to be successful with support from the students and administration. CecUO. On March 16,1978, DPMA held its second annual Career’s Day Workshop. Men and women from various data processing positions were present to talk to members about the different areas of data processing. The workshop was held in the Hauser Student Union in the ballroom from 1:00-4:00 p.m. In December of 1977 the Art majors of WSSU assembled themselves to form a new art organization. Out of this meeting the Art Forum was formed. Since its establishment last semester the Art Forum has sponsored several public art exhibits for the enjoyment and enrichment of WSSU students as well as the Winston-Salem community. The first of these art exhibits. was held from January 30 - February 3 in the Hauser Student Union. During the entire month of February the work of WSSU art student’s grace, beautified the walls of the downtown branch of the Winston-Salem public library. On February 6, 1977 at the Newark Boys Choir Lycemn program paintings were displayed. Paintings were also placed in the Kenneth R. Williams Auditorium during Parent’s Day and during the performance of Bubbling Brown Sugar. The Art Forum was established with several purposes in mind. The organization keeps com munication lines open between art teachers and students. The organization also seeks to motivate art students, to keep them aware of the different mediums of art, to keep the university and community aware of the talent in the art depart ment to obtain noted artists as speakers for the art department and to encourage the exhibition of environment is business’s en vironment; the people who malte up corporations have to breathe the same air, drink the same water, and gaze at the same scenery, as the people they work among. O’Kelly Library Staff have remarked that student attendance to the library has increased since Parent’s Day on March 5th. Was it a result of parental conferences with in structors or was it those mid semester reports? Whatever the reason, the library staff isn’t complaining. The staff has ex pressed a concern for helping students learn what materials are available to them. When you need assistance in library, you should consult staff members. They are there to help you. The library staff attempts to provide an atmosphere where students may work in pleasure and comfort, but this atmosphere can be provided only with the full cooperation of all the library users. Students are asked to observe the regulations of the library. Loud and boisterous talk disturbs other students trying to study. To learn the system used to regulate the use of the library and make the greatest possible use of library facilities, look for regular information in “From the Desks of O’Kelly Library” to be featured in future issues of The News Argus.
