APRIL 29. 1967 JUiEJR ££_ Page 7 Golf, Tennis Teams Prepare for Tournaments The Wesleyan golf and ten nis teams are going through their final week tune-ups for the Dixie Intercollegiate Ath letic Conference tournaments to be held May 4 and 5. The tennis team will travel to Charleston, S. C., for their battle for the conference crown. The Bishop netters have found the going rough for most of the season, managing to win only two matches—7-2, and 5- 4 decisions over UNC-Char- lotte—while dropping seven contests. However, the Bishops, re lying on the li-kes of Tom Far mer, Bill Bonner, Mike Scha- den, Harold Sutton, Jeff Wilson Professors Composition To Be Played “Symphonic Dance”, a com position by John T. Mac Lean, instructor of music at Wesley an, will be performed by the Indiana University Symphony Orchestra as a part of their program May 16. The composition, character ized by use of the modern idiom and partially based on a Romantic conception, will be performed at the School of Mu sic on the university campus and will be conducted by Har ry Farbman. Mac Lean’s composition, which was written in 1965, was one of the concerto winners on campus and will serve as the introductory for the per formance. Scored for full or chestration and lasting seven minutes, it is characterized by rhythmic drive and Iryic- by rhythmic drive and ly ricism with an overall intent of dramatic effect. MacL«an, who has had pre vious compositions performed by the Mobile Symphony, the Oklahoma Symphony, and the Brevard Music Center Orches tra, recently completed his dis sertation, a 25-minute compo sition in three movements, and expects to receive his Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University this summer, A native of Jersey City, N.J., Mac Lean earned his B.A. de gree from Drew University and his M. A. and M. M. degrees from Florida State University. He taught public school mu sic and gave orchestra instruc tion in Jacksonville, Fla., for two years. He was on the staff at Brevard Music Cen ter for four summers, where he wrote the Center’s prize- winning composition in the 19- 64 summer contest. He teaches theory and coun terpoint at Wesleyan in addi tion to giving instructions in strings. Mac Lean has been given a private commission to write an unaccompanied Violo Sonata and is expected to begin work this summer. I. W. ROSE Drug Company 112 N. Behind the out standing swing of Lee Ball, the Bishops have rolled to eight wins while dropping only two matches. The Bishops, undefeated in conference play, must be con sidered favorites to cop their first DIAC crown. The two blots on their record have come from non - conference foes Campbell College and Atlantic Christian College. In addition to Ball, other Bishops depended on to carry the load are Benny Goodrich, Buck Roney, Tony DeMuth, Rod Moore and Mike Hux. The golfers have one more match, a dual contest with Lynchburg College and UNC- Charlotte at Lynchburg, before the tournament, while the net ters must face College of Char leston prior to the opening of the conference tournament. 54/^ /“-4 % Harold Sutton smashes one in a recent tennis match on the home courts. Harold will be one of the Bishops competing in the DIAC tournament May 5-6 in Charleston, S. C.
