As far as this crit ic is concerned, one of the most important assets of a movie today is its be ginning, including its credits, for the credits, if ingeniously contrived, set the mood of the movie immediately. The credits of “The Producers-^'are interspersed with reac tions by Broadway’s re nowned fiddler. Zero Mostel. Wilder, as Bloom, conspires with Mostel, Max Bialystock, to create a musical which is sure to flop. With a musical open er, “Springtime for Hit ler,” the play does its best to exaggerate gross ness. As the musical pro gresses, however, it be comes more and more popular with the audience, and, because of its suc cess, Max Bailystock and Bloom, Mostel and Wild er, are sent to prison for having embezzeled the money to produce the show from lonely, old ladies. While in prison. Wilder and Mostel conceive of a new musical with actual prisoners singing “Pri soners of Love” as an opener. This one gets fin ancial backing from the warders, and, as the movie ends, it is shown being choreographed by Mostel. “The Producers” is indeed one of the most uproariously funny mo vies released last year.
