FRroAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1970 HIE DECREE PAGE 3 ^We Need Student Feedback Continued frm 1 office. Will you follow a po licy this year whereby some ru les will be enforced while others are politely ignored? Cordts: This is the kind of spot that the Dean of Students is always on. The rules in the Bishop’s LAW are fully sup ported by the Board of Trus tees, so I’m in no position to modify such rules. Any stu dent who chooses to ignore these rules does so at a cer tain risk. ’ DECREE: In reference to the Board of Trustees and the Rocky Mount community, students last year accused the Dean’s office of being colored by Rocky Mount morality. Do you think that there is a problem here? Cordts; None of us exists in a vacuum. We’re all em bedded in some kind of com munity setting. Any institu tion has a particular environ ment --a social, political, and economical environment. We must be responsive to this en vironment and yet can have an effect upon it. ft’s difficult when an institution of higher learning becomes isolated from its community. DECREE: What are your ob jectives for this year? “We can create a successful Wesleyan Community ...” Cordts: I’ve already ex pressed my hopes for broadly- based student involvement in the evaluation, of instruction. I would also like to initiate Se nior interviews. I think we let our seniors leave us with out making any kind of system atic effort to gain the value of feedback which they can pro vide. They, perhaps better than any other group, can eva luate the entire college situa tion. I want to encourage this. CONVOCATIONS ALERT: STUDENTS! The more we can en courage our graduates to seek admission to graduate and pro fessional schools, the more we will enhance our reputation as a liberal arts college. Another problem we should cope with is the lack of effectiveness of some of our student organiza tions. This is a political year, yet we do not have an active Young Democrats Club or Young Republican Club. This is re grettable, and I’d like to do whatever I can to encourage more effective student organi zations. We have a very press ing need to clarify current col lege policy in regard to off- campus housing. There seems to be a misunderstanding as to what the college’s policy is. This isn’t fair to the students with the situation as vague as it seems to be. DECREE; What your feelings toward thej^g situa tion on this and o&r camp uses? Cordts; I don’t quite know how to “get a handle” on this one. It’s a problem pecu liarly of this generation. There are some very upsetting legal implications of this problem. I know what the “bust” at Stonybrook did to that institu tion, and I would hate to see anything of this nature ever happen here. On the other hand, if the surrounding community— this gets back to your pre vious question--should con clude that something has to be done about this problem, then the legal means apparently are available for the state to take rather precipitant action, that is, to swear out John Doe war rants and bust the campus. This would be a terrible thing. (Contimifid on Page 4) SERVING ROCKY MOUNT FOR 35 YEARS Shirts, 5—$1.29 1 HOUR SERVICE AT NO EXTRA CHARGE TUX RENTALS Purvis Gleaners And Laundry 122 SUNSET AVE.
