MONDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1970 THE DECREE PAGES Letters To The Editor (Continued From Page 2) cycle their wastes and quit using the Escambia River - the public domain for a dump. We intend to take sanctions against all industries, of which there are six locally, dumping into the Escambia River and the bay. To establish our effec tiveness, we have decided to begin by calling for a boycott of Astro Turf, the Monsanto product that depends most hea vily on the college market. We desperately need your support. There is nothing less at stake than the bay itself - the bay which is a Integral part of our biosphere, is essential to a balanced environment. It doesn’t take much thought to realize that Escambia Bay is about as important to you as it is to us. By support ing our boycott you not only deny revenue to an enemy of the bay, you also help assert, for once, that our waters and our skies are not dumps, and that even large industries must be held responsible for their was tes. -We ask that you put up with natural grass for a good while longer -We ask that you compell your friends and local industries not to buy Astro Turf and other Monsanto products -We very respectfully and ur gently request that you obtain, through your student govern ment and alumni associations, a binding, official promise not to purchase Astro Turf until mmm cafe “WE SERVE WONDERFUL FOOD AND OUR COFFEE CANT BE BEAT.” 906 N. Monsanto quits dumping its wastes into Escambia River and Escambia Bay. -We recommend that before you or your college administration buy any other sort of artific ial grass, you determine that manufacturer is not, like Mon santo, using the environment for a dump. We need your active response to this appeal, even if you have no need at your institution for Astro Turf. Your support is urgently requested. Please send us notification of your administration’s promise not to purchase Astro Turf as soon as it can be obtained. Dear Julie, Recently, in a teacher block orientation meeting, we were informed that several of us would be placed in the Roanoke Rapids-Weldon area. It was also stated that each participant in the program would pay the cost of his transportation. Est imating the distance to Roanoke Rapids at a mere 30 miles, we would travel a total of 2,- 100 miles during the teaching experience. It was not so much the loudness of the noise as much as the fact that it was eminat- ing from my otherwise quiet garbage container. In a mo ment my lightning wits were scrambling to battle stations, any ex- Boy Scout Camp counse lor knows that a crunching trash can means only one thing: mice! The art of mousing is best performed by cats and mouse traps but in the scruffle al most anyone will do. My room mate, now awakened by my en deavors to corner the two mice I had chanced upon, joined in the hunt armed with our G.I. shovel and a sadistic grin. But mice are fleet of foot and our miniscule visitors were too fast for us and soon escaped into the radiator. Upon talking to friends and neighbors I discovered that these furry guerillas are grow ing in number on campus and have easy passage from room to room through the heating sys tems. It may be that one day they may outnumber us and everyone will be slowly munch ed out of house and home. My dreams become the nightmares of the character Winston in 1984 who was broken by his fear of rats. Wesleyan must do something to save itself from these Roden Hoards. We must organize a Home Defense Force against the invaders! If you should capture one, grill him. Torture him into revealing in formation about his friends. It won’t be easy, but they are rats and this is war. When you've got it, mail him to your favor ite administration official and the problem should soon be taken care of.
