PAGE 4 THE DECREE WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 10, 1973 SIGMA PHI DELTA In 1971, Vicky Sewell, Bren da Logwood, and Kathy Garrick decided that one sorority on the Wesleyan campus was simply not enough. Our three young ladies not only decided that we needed an additional sorority, they also decided to do some thing constructive to alter this situation. As a consequence. Sigma Phi Delta was born and later confirmed on February 15, 1971. Coincidentally, the Greek letters in the title correspond to each of the three fraternities on campus: Sigma Omega, Nu Gamma Phi, and Alpha Delta Chi. Due to a dire need for social functions on campus. Sigma Phi Delta concerned itselfwith pro viding activities for the stu dents, regardless of the stu dents’ involvement in the Greek systems. Our purpose is to unify the student body, not divi de the campus in terms of fra ternity or sorority affiliations. Therefore, all parties spon sored by Sigma Phi Delta have been open. The sorority has been fairly busy since it began a year and a half ago. We have sponsored several open parties, and several Pizza Inn get-togethers for the group. In addition, we collected for the March of Di mes, had bake and doughnut sales, and for the past two years have made it our policy to send Christmas cards to the people at Guardian Care Nursing Ho me. We also sell cokes during the soccer games here at sc hool. This past September the sorority rewarded itself and advisor and family with a much deserved weekend at the beach. Sigma Phi Delta had its first rush week and pledge period in the winter of 1972. Pledge tradition was added and March 15, 1972, the sisterhood wel comed its first pledge class into the sorority. Dr. J. M. Purser, who stron gly upholds our socializing po licies, is our capable advisor. Dr. Purser takes an active in terest in the sisterhood and at tends and contributes to soro rity activities. We are for ever indebted to Dr. Purser's loyal support. Sigma Phi Delta is a young organization. WE realize that we have quite a future ahead of us and we intend to make the best of it. We hope you will be included in our plans for the future. Pi Epsilon emerged as the first sorority; it was composed of nine girls joined together in si milar service and social in terests. Pi Epsilon arose to fulfill certain needs lacking in other organizations on campus. And today, it has been able, not only to meet the needs of her sis- I ters, but to change with their changing needs. While main taining her identity as a soror ity, Pi Epsilon allows creati vity and individuality; she ex ists as a means, not an end, for her participants. Pi Epsilon Sorority has thr oughout her history promoted unity within the Wesleyan col lege community. Simultaneous ly, she has strived in the past and continues today to meet the needs of the community as evi denced by the open parties, the child-care center.
