MARY JOHNSON RETIRES Mary W. (more affectionately known as "Grannie") Johnson is sur rounded by friends and co-worker 8 in the Sample Department. Front row, left to right, are: Lassie Crotts, "Grannie," lone Calhoun and Alice Marie Hill. In the background are: Elva Lawing, Ruth Page, Forrest Jones (supervisor), Mary Deaton, James Johnson and Lawrence Austin. After more than 45 years of service with Adams-Millis Corpora tion, Mary W. Johnson retired May 13 on the basis of age. The fact that most of those years were spent preparing samples for our customers says all that need be said about her work. She first came to Adams- Millis as a mender for the old High Point Hosiery Company in 1916, but soon was put on sample goods where she remained until her retirement. Her employment was continuous except for time out to have her two daughters and for a seven months' period when she worked in another hosiery mill. Mary W. Johnson was born in Farmington Township in Davie County and attended Pine School. When she was nine years old, her mother died and she became "mother" to the three younger children in the family. In 1914, the family broke up and Mary came to High Point to live with her oldest sister. On May 17, 1926, she was mar ried to Thomas E. Johnson from Detroit, Michigan, and of that mar- iage two daughters, Virginia and Thomasine, were born. Thomasine, now Mrs. Max H. Hill, was formerly employed in the Pairing Department of Plant #7; and Virginia, now Mrs. T. C. Hooks, was formerly employed in the ladies' division, also. Both daughters --as well as three grand children--live near Mary's home at 500 Everett Lane. Mary is a member of Rankin Memorial Methodist Church and at tends Sunday School and church regu larly. Now that she's a lady of leisure, Mary plans to spend part of her time with her’sister, Mrs. Harding Glide- well of Winston-Salem, who will re tire from Reynolds Tobacco Companv this fall. But, she says if you can't find her on the porch at 500 Everett Lane or at her sister's Sprague Street address in Winston-Salem, she’ll be up in the sticks with the hoot owls-- that's up in Davie County at the home of her cousin where she says the "gang" all meet to visit. Wherever she is, you can rest assured that "Grannie" Johnson is enjoying living. IN MEMORIAM James R. Lawson Father of Mazie Rowland, Folding De partment, Plant #7. Mrs. Earl Gossett Sister of Agnes Smith, Pairing De partment, Plant #1. Mrs. Fannie Kirby Mother of Johnnie Kirby, porter. Main Office.
