Eagle Sports Charles Murphy attempts a dunk. Eaglettes playoff loss; ends fair season The Lady Eagles brought an 8 and 14 record to the first round of the ClAA Tour nament at Saint Augustine College Thursday, February 18 where they they ended their season with a loss to Norfolk State, 93-82. The game was a much closer affair than the 11-point spread would in dicate. Indeed the Central Winston L. Majette team seemed to be in control until the final seconds. But Norfolk came back and regulation play ended in a 75-75 heat. It was a different story in overtime. Majette The Eagles of North Carolina Central University have not only established a place in the Norfolk Scope, (the site of the ClAA Tourna ment this February 26-28), but also, they have achieved a winning record of 14-11 to give them their first winning season in eleven years. The Eagles had a tough away schedule on February 21st and 18th as the Eagles walloped Bowie State 95-70 and also beat UNC- Wilmington in a 96-90 over time victory. The high scorers against Bowie State were John Bishop, 31 points and Donald Sinclair with 18 points as Central routed Bowie State for their 13th win of the season. John Bishop scored 32 points against UNC- Wilmington along with Charles Murphy scoring 26 points. David Binion added 10 points and 10 rebounds. On February 16, Central played the Vikings of Elizabeth City State for their last home game of the season. The Eagles lost by the score of 82-72. On February 14, the Eagles played Livingstone College in Livingstone, N.C. and on February 11 St. Augustine College in Raleigh, N.C.. Cen tral beat Livingstone by the score of 123-102. With Dave Binion and Donald Sinclair scoring 28 and 21 respec tively. St. Augustine College vic- tored over the Eagles by the score of 96-84. None-the- less, Donald Sinclair scored 31 points and John Bishop scored 26 points. On February 11, in Mcdougald gymnasium the been at their sharpest for the playoffs. They had suffered a series of losses at the end of the season that may have done much to dampen the team’s spirit. The Eaglettes played UNC- Wilmington on Wednesday, February 18, and lost to the Lady Seahawks by the score of 89-63. High scorers for the Eaglettes were Natasha Scott, 14 points, and Mary Simpson with 12 points. Previously, the Eaglettes suffered successive losses to the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State by the score of 59-49, the Lady Bears of Liv ingstone College, 66-67, the Lady Bulldogs of St. Augustine’s College, and Virginia Union. In the semi-finals of the ClAA tournament Virginia Union beat St. Augustine, 83-52 and Norfolk St. beat Virginia State, 73-60. Eagles Mary Simpson drives in for two. Deidra Solomon a super player By Winston Majette and Kim Slade One of the most remarkable players on the women’s basketball team is Diedra Solomon, 18, physiology major, from Henderson, N. C. . Diedra has accumalated outstanding statistics for a freshman women’s basket ball player. Columbus, Ohio 43210 (614)422-2809 Eagles played Virginia Union. With excellent support from the bench, the Eagles manag ed to serve the 1979-1980 ClAA champions, Virgina Union, with a 98-87 victory. Sports Update The Eagles were honored with the fact that John Bishop, a junior guard from Dover Beach, Delaware and Metrial Floyd, a senior from Fairmont, North Carolina, were named to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball team. In Longwood, Virginia, on February 23 the NCCU Eagles lost to the Longwood Lancers by the score of 99-71. The Lancer’s went ahead 34-14 with 7:00 remaining in the first half, and Central never caught up. North Carolina Central (14-12) were led by Darnell Evans, 12 points, John Bishop, 11 points and Donald Sinclair added 10. The women’s bowling team placed fifteenth in the bowl ing Regionals, February 13-15, in Johnson City, Ten nessee. The men placed twenty-third in the Regionals. The tennis team will begin its’ season on March 6, under Coach Edmonds. The women’s softball team, coached by Robert Vaughn, has been having tryouts for the spring of 81’. Virginia Union’s women’s basketball team will meet Norfolk State’s women’s Basketball team at the Nor folk Scope in Norfolk, Virginia for the ClAA championship. Livingstone College, on February 23 named Mel Rose, former defensive coor dinator at South Carolina State,' as its’ new football coach.Rose played offensive line at North Carolina A&T, from which he graduated in 1973. and the travelling took a lot out of me.” added Diedra. Diedra feels that being on the basketball team did ef fect her study habits, but she intends to buckle down on her books and raise her average. Dee confides that she has faced the problem of ad justing to a new coach. “ One problem I had when playing basketball this year was ad justing to a new coach, we had to learn from each other and that takes time. Diedra had a few complica tions during the winter and fall, but she still accomplish ed many things.” My ac complishments this year were helping the team go to the ClAA tournament in basketball as well as volleyball, where we were runner ups.
