The task of keeping clean, attrac
tive, and in good repair a y)lant as
large as the Duke University Medical
Center is gigantic. During an aver
age 24 hour weekday over 6,000 pa
tients, visitors, staff and students oc
cupy its rooms and pass through its
corridors.
For the past 6 years there has not
been a single day in which some ma
jor construction or renovation w'as
not in progress. This has added con
siderably to the j)roblems of our
Housekeeping Department in keeping
the buildings clean.
Over a year ago, recognizing that
there was a need to improve the clean
liness and appearance of our institu
tion, an inspection program was in
troduced and has been in operation
since. T think you will agree with me
that the appearance of our buildings
is greatly improved as a result of the
W'ork of Mr. Swanson, Mrs. Scoggins
and many other participants of the
program.
It is not only the number of peoi)le
occupying a building or the heavy
schedule of activity carried on with
in it that determines how nnich dam
age and soil will accumulate; even
more important are the habits of the
occupants. It is surprising what a
difference it makes in the general ap
pearance of a building if cigarettes
are always put in receptacles, trash
is put in waste baskets, and proper
care is taken of equipment and
painted w'alls. Cleanliness is conta
gious. Our patients and visitors can
not help but follow the example set
by our staff.
I have often noted that the medical
and hospital care patients receive in a
clean, attractive hospital is thought

What would hel]) most to keej) our

Hospital Administrator; If hosi)ital
persoiniel would deposit paper
cups, etc. in the trash containers
and would pick up similar cups and
bottles left lying around by visitors
instead of depending on House
keeping, the appearance would im
prove.
Senior Staff Member: Everything
should be moved out of the halls
of the hospital and the medical
school so that cleaning could be
done more efficiently.
Medical Student: If personnel,' stu
dents, staff members and visitors
had a specific ])lace for eating in
stead of eating in the halls, class
rooms, lobby or any available space.
Maid, Ilousekeepimj: Cooperation!
Help the Housekeeping Depart

should go instead of putting it
down wherever you happen to be.
