Duke Hospital, InterCom Page 3 Miss Dot Wilkinson, Ilanes House counselor for many years, tliorouKlily enjoys lier many girls. Here student officers Uee Letlico, Evelyn Havens (President) and Anne Dix confer in Miss Wilkinson’s Hanes House apartment. Part of the senior-year Public Health course includes weekly visits to the Lincoln Hospital Well Baby Clinic. Here Betsy W'oodhall and Mary Denyes assist Dr. W. A. Cleland examine a healthy charmer! This senior course is a favorite here at Duke because the girls have the .satisfaction of knowing that they are performing valu- al)le community service while they are learning. In addition to their work at Lincoln and with their families they observe and work at the Cerebral Palsy Hospital and various Durham nursery schools. The natural appeal of children also makes work on the pediatric ward at Duke a favorite for the .iunior and senior students. Since today’s nursing student faces the same tuition and other university fees as any other Duke student, the oijportunity to earn money is often a necessity. Evening duty and weekend duty of the 3rd and 4th year students nuikes outside job commitments difficult. The Hospital has an arrangement that is mutually advantageous to both hos])ital and student. As the students conijjlete their training in pediatric, medical, surgical and obstetrical nursing, the girls may be called upon to work on these floors where needed. A highlight for the senior nursing student is being fitted for her white uniforms sure jyroof that graduation is not far off! Here Sylvia Matthews is me.'isurcd while a group of classmates wait their turns. A Hanes Hou.'ie bull session—a familiar part of dormitory living anywheic. Hero Jane Ford seems to be telling Mary Saylor, Cynthia Kreider, Barbara Feay, Carol Todd and Louis^ Dise a real whopper! Mr. .lames D. Henry conducts his East Campus music a])])recia- tion course for a group consisting of over half nursing students. In addition to their work on their nursing major, today’s student at Duke must learn about the natural and social sciences, Eng lish, religion, ]iliilosophy, art and music as well. The Duke Nursing School graduate is a well-rounded person as well as an excellent nurse!
