Thomas Reamer, director of pharmacy services at the hospital for almost 40 years, has been elected an honorary member of the Duke School of Medicine Alumni Association. Mr. Reamer, who will retire June 30, was presented with the alumni certificate "in recognition of his outstanding and dedicated service to generations of Duke medical students and staff." The award came at the Duke alumni dinner during the North Carolina Medical Association meeting May 18 in Pinehurst. Mr. Reamer is only the second non-physician elected to honorary membership in the association. The first was the Rev. James T. Cleland, dean of the Duke Chapel. Dr. Jay M. Arena, professor of pediatrics and secretary-treasurer of the Alumni Association, praised Mr. Reamer's* knowledge of drugs and their efficient use and his cordiality in sharing his information with Duke alumni day or night. Mr. Reamer, a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, was named North Carolina, Pharmacist of the Year in 1967. He is a charter member and past president of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists and in 1959 received the Michigan chapter's H.A.K. Whitney Award. Before coming to Duke in 1931, Mr. Reamer was assistant chief pharmacist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Ruffin Honored Dr. Julian M. Ruffin, professor of medicine, was feted at a surprise dinner party given by his current and former fellows and secretaries May 16 at the Downtowner Motor Inn. Dr. Ruffin will retire from the Medical Center August 30 and will move his practice to Croasdaile Clinic. After several rounds of tributes, Dr. Ruffin was presented with a framed certificate signed by all the fellows as a symbol of their continuing respect for him. Dr. Ruffin was on the original staff of the Medical Center when it opened in July, 1930. NEWS (continued from page eleven) At Meetings Dr. Maurice B. Landers, III, of the Department of Ophthalmology presented a lecture on "Ocular Effects of Lasers" at the annual North Carolina Medical Society meeting at Pinehurst May 18. Dr. Landers also recently attended the Association for Research in Ophthalmology in Sarasota, Florida, and participated in a course on retinal detachment at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston. Participant Dr. Catherine M. Wilfert of the Department of Pediatrics participated in a panel on endocarditis at the North Carolina Heart Association's 21st annual meeting May 26-27. Dr. Wilfert also gave a discussion of Immunization at the Eastern District of the North Carolina Public Health Association June 5 at Nags Head. At Symposium Dr. Donald Silver, associate professor of surgery, attended the International Symposium on Cardiovascular Research in Paris April 20-22 and presented the papers "Hypofibrinolysis: It's Role in I ntravascular Thrombosis," and "Lymphangioplasty: A Safe, Simple Adjunct for Treating Lymphedema." He also went to London to visit the Great Ormand Street Hospital for Sick Children. At Meetings Dr. Banks Anderson, Jr., of the Department of Ophthalmology, attended the meeting of the Association for Research in Ophthalmology in Sarasota, Florida, May 2-6 and the N.C.
