But make sure the holly is fireproof. That's the advice of Marshall Fowler, the Medical Center's fire marshal. Mr. Fowler explained that to stay in line with state fire code regulations, all Christmas decorations used in the Hospital must be fire retardant or flameproof and electrical decorations must carry the UL or FM approved labels. Live trees and greenery, along with electric lights on artificial trees, cannot be used. Also, exit and hallway smoke doors should not be covered or obstructed in any manner. Employes who join in the decorating fun should make sure that no decorations are put up in patient rooms or labs where flammable materials such as oxygen are used or stored. Nurses Hold Workshop A workshop for head nurses at the Medical Center was held Nov. 12 and 13 at Quail Roost. Nurse management consultant Mrs. Joan M. Ganong, RN, conducted the workshop. She is vice president of the management consultant firm W.L. Ganong Co. in Pittsburg, Pa. Purpose of the workshop was to better acquaint nurses with concepts related to decision-making, communication and personnel relations as part. of the administrative process. Nurses worked primarily in small problem-solving groups. Open discussion of the role of the heads of medical centers was included. Miss Wilma Minniear, director of nursing services, gave the opening welcome Thursday morning. UNICEF Cards on Sale UNICEF Christmas cards are on sale again this year at the Medical Center Library. On display are eight types of cards, all priced at $2 for a box of 12. In addition, the library is offering UNICEF Spanish-English and French-English date book calendars at $2.50 each and UNICEF children's wall calendars at $1 each. Recently appointed ad ministrative assistant in the House Staff Office is Mrs. Mary Fendt. She will be responsible for assisting house officers with personnel and related ad ministrative affairs. Prior to this appointment, Mrs. Fendt was assistant director of the Education Improvement Program, a Duke University research project in education for culturally deprived children, funded by the Ford Foundation. Mrs. Fendt, a native of Kalamazoo, Mich., graduated from Taylor University (Upland, Ind.) with a B.A. in elementary education. She has done graduate work in special education at Indiana University. Her husband Paul is associate head of the correspondence school at UNC, where he is a PhD candidate in adult education. He has previously served as assistant personnel director and training director for Duke University. They are parents of two children, Fred, 12, and Mary K., 9. One of her favorite past-times is exchanging stereo tapes with correspondents. The hobby is really a family affair with all members participating in production of the tapes. The Fendts have gathered tapes which include life sounds from a New Guinea village, cloistered Nuns in choir, Mexican school children, Goodenough Islanders "playing" the water with their hands and many others. rCBRUARV j.' ij 14 15 '6 Of t m T w I I 3 4 S ( ; I 9 10 II i; 13 |4 IS |( 17 II H M ?l n 23 24 2> X 27 2t II ir 13 inr le H 19 X 21 22 23 24 H 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 THURSDAY,DECEMBER 10 Alpha Omega Alpha Symposium Topic: "The Future of Medicine—Perspectives of Government, Academia, and Organized Medicine" 2 to 4 p.m. Amphitheater Director's Hour Program Speaker: Dr. Roger O.
