October, 1969 -••«•••••• •_* • • • • • • ^a*a • • • •••«•••• the ram's horn page 9 The Rams Heard By RICK MASON Last Spring Quarter, there was a rumor drifting through the student grapevine which made many people happy. And contrary to most yarns passed around campus; this one was true. Southeastern was finally to have some athletic fields built on the grounds. Everyone who didn't walk around with his eyes and ears completely dosed knew full well the need for these facilities. Well, Fall has arrived on schedule, but our athletic fields haven't had such luck. Maybe they were lost in the mail, or built in downtown Chadbourn by mistake. However, it looks like SCC is still being denied something which is taken for granted at most schools. Perhaps, there is a good reason for this delay, and maybe no one should ask questions. There is a chance, though, that the P.E. department could be getting a little run-around. At any rate, maybe the S. G.A., or just some interested students, should inquire into the matter. Not as a body of tin gods who want to criticize the administration on their campus and sincerely wish to help. We need those facilities, and teamwork is an established method of accomplishing things. Student participation in sports events has actually seen a notable improvement lately. There might be even more students at the games, if there was room for them on the sidelines. The trouble is, with all the countless faculty members turning out to cheer the team on, what chance does a poor student have? The students are going to have to petition a sincere plea: faculty members please curb your interest and participation. Gosh, it's really TOO much to ask of a professor to drive ALL the way to CHADBOURN. So faculty, don't tax yourselves so much in the interest of our school SCC CHEERLEADERS ARE CHOSEN On September 13th, the cheerleaders were selected by Miss Sandra Sasser and Mr, Joe Nance of the Physical Education Department. The girls were chosen from a roster of 14 who auditioned. Miss Sasser states that she is well pleased with the progress of the girls. She farther states that the girls are worling together beautifully. The uniforms are now being made and according to Miss Sasser the girls will be ready to support the Rams when they meet U.S.C. at Florence on November 14th. kt ■ > r A near score for Rams when UNC-W goalie (far left) is caught out of position. Ram players are Williams , Osteen , and Hardin Basketball Promising By BILL HARDIN Coach Nance is expecting to have a winning basketball season. Compared to the teams SCC has had in the past, possibly the best material is available this year. Returning from last year's lineup are Maliston Stanley, Brodie Andrew, Clyde Malpass, Ai Brice, and Don Dantzler. With these veterans and the excellent stock of newcomers, Southeastern should be strong. The team is not tall, but to make up for this. Coach Nance is counting on the speed and agility of his players. He reports that the team has good spirit. Our first game will be Nov. 14 at use against their freshmen. The first home game is Nov. 22 against James Sprunt Instt. SCC has a 29 game schedule, which will provide plenty of chances for the home fans to see their team. Let's support them! Southeastern goalie Winky Seaton (in white shirt) dives over opposition to prevent a score. Lucky Unlucky For SCC ByJOHNHOWARTH The only luck that has come up for the die hard Rams is that they have won all the tosses for possession of the ball. But from here it's been all downhill for the young team. SCC traveled to UNC at Pembroke and played to a nip and tuck 1-1 tie for three quarters. But the Braves scored twice in the last three minutes of the game. Come to find out the dock was let run over for three minutes. UNC-P came for a rematch with the SCC. Luck showed its providence on the Ram's field with one of the SCC players putting the ball in his own goal. Later there was a hand ball in the penalty area, which lead to another score for the Braves. Bad luck came in the name of New Hanover, SCC, having a hot day at shooting at the goal (with over 30 shots) could only make one '.successful goai N.H.H.S. came back with a goal which threw the contest into overtime. Two 5 minute overtimes, to be exact, which resulted with N.H.H.S. having one more corner kick than the Rams. Finding out after the game there was a mistake in the counting of corner kicks showed a tie between the two teams. The title summarizes the whole situation (Luck is Unluck for SCC) at our college. If you are a lucky person, come see how a jinxed team tries to struggle through 88 minutes of soccer.
