December 1970 the ram's horn page 7 Lenoir gives 2nd loss The Rams of Southeastern Community College took their second loss of the season with a road game played in Kin ston. The Lenoir College squad led by Coach Spear took a hot handed lead to defeat the Rams. 94-82. Lenoir, shooting 60 percent from the floor, were led by Fred Catch, Charles Hall, and Henry Taylor who put in over 20 scorers a piece. Ronnie Taylor and Ronnie Jones of the Ram squad were held to only 13 and 12 rebounds, respectively, by the scrappy Lenoir team. Ronnie Taylor who is averaging over 25 points per game for , SCC, put in 32 points. Dennis Wilson had 18; Ronnie Jones, 9; Josh Todd, 4; Joe Stanley, 3; Charlie Groves, 8; Olan Vaught, 9; and Jim Tucker, 1. The Lenoir Squad was led by Fred Catch, 24; Charles Hall, 20; John Byrd, 11; Henry Taylor, 20; Clifton Loftin, 9; Leroy Cantch, 6; and Ken Brown, 4. Pembroke hand SCC second defeat Coach Walsh's SCC Rams took their second win of the cage season as they defeated Pembroke freshmen, 89-68, in a game played at the local Chadbourn gym. The Rams who hit on 50 percent of their floor shots, took an early game lead to hand Pembroke the defeat. Leading the Rams in their win was Ronnie Taylor with 26 points. Ronnie Jones again led the squad defensively with 19 rebounds. Walsh praised his Rams on their second win and said it showed the strength of his inexperienced tearrfand gave them much hope. Scoring for the Rams were Ronnie Jones, 22; Josh Todd, 6; Joe Stanley„24; Ronnie Taylor, 26; Charlie Groves, 16; Olan Vaught, 5; C.A. Butler, 3; Dennis Wilson, 5; and Jim Tucker, 2. For the Baby Pembroke Braves, Ronnie Smith had 18 points to lead their point making. Charles Smith had 15; ’.fcHTi Sn»ith, 12; Hambric, 15; Covington, 6; and Arrington, 2. Future Games In upcoming games. The Rams play at Southwood on the nth, 14th at Fayetteville Tech; 15th College of Albermarle; 17th at Gaston Community College. The Rams will thena have a break from school work and their road trips, and vviH not play again until January 5 when they meet the Wilmington frosh in a home game at the Chadbourn gym. Powers' scliolarsliip By FRANK O'BRIEN One of the leading high school basketball players in the border area of the state, and now a student at Southeastern Community College, has been awarded the Third Annual Jiggs Power Athletic Scholarship. He is Luther Freeman, a 6- foot-1 forward on the Hallsboro High Tigers basketball team last season with a 17 points-per-game average. Freeman is the son of AAr. and Mrs. Arthur Freeman of the Bronx, N.Y., and he resides with his uncle, Frank Godwin of Route 1, Hallsboro. Freeman's high school honors included membership on the Whiteville News Reporter's All-Columbus County Basketball team, the Raleigh News and Observer's Freeman had an out standing career at Hallsboro High. In addition to his high point average, he also averaged 15 rebounds per game and eight assists. His coach at Hallsboro, Linwood Hedgepeth, said, "He was the backbone of our team; always giving his best effort and he was a great attitude. I've never worked with a better young man." Powers, who has been sports editor of the Whiteville News Reporter for over 20 years, is one of the state's best-known newsmen. He expressed delight with the choice of Freeman for the scholarship award. Powers said, "We feel that the Southsastern Community College athletic department has made a good choice in Luther as the 1971 scholarship winner. We watched him as a senior at Hallsboro last year, and he was everything tnai Coach Hedgepeth said he was. We believe he will be a real asset to ths Southeastern basketball team."
