Win By 5-4
The Fighting Christian baseballers
closed out their home diamond sea
son with a well-earned 5 to 4 victory
over the Atlantic Christian Bulldogs
on the Elon field on Wednesday af
ternoon, May 2nd, gaining sweet re
venge for a defeat suffered at the
hands of the Bulldogs at Wilson ear
lier in the season.
The Christians came from behind
in the final three innings of the game
here to overcome a 4 to 0 lead which
the Atlantic Christian nine had built
up in the first three frames.
The visitors had hopped on Ed
Kirchgessner for a single run in the
second and had added three more
scores in the third, but the big Elon
freshman held the Bulldogs scoreless
after that until he gave way to a
pinch hitter in the seventh inning.
The Christians started their win
ning rally when Rick Smith blasted
a solo homer in the seventh, and they
added a pair of markers in the eighth
when Danny Pendry singled after two
were out and scored on Frankie Men-
ch’s double. Mensch then scored on
an error and a single by Rick Smith.
Coming up for their final time at
bat and trailing by a single run, the
Elon boys scored two runs to tie
and then win the game. Taylor Dug-
gins led off with a triple, but pinch-
hitter Mike Spillane fanned. Jimmie

Netters Divide
In Final Meets
The Fighting Christian tennis team
split its two final matches of the
season, topping High Point by a
7 to 2 margin and losing to Pfeiffer
by a 2 to 5 score, and the split gave
the Elon netters a final record of
three wins and seven losses for the
year, with nine of the ten matches
against Carolinas Conference teams.
The continued improvement in
Elon tennis play this year was evident
ui the many close scores found in
mdividual matches of both the singles
and doubles division. In several in
stances the matches moved to three
sets before a decision In either direc
tion.

Dempsey Herring (left) and Mike Spillane (right), a pair of steady per
formers with the Elon baseball squad, have played major roles in the 1967
campaign for the Fighting Christian nine. Herring, who is a junior third
baseman and a letterman from last season, was a starter at third base in
most of the games played by the Christians and led the Elon squad in hit
ting until the final five games of the year, when he was edged by Danny
Pendry for hitting honors. Herring finished the season with a .324 average.
Spillane. who is a sophomore reserve from last spring, was the real utility
performer for the Christians, for he participated in 24 of the 28 games and
played both shortstop and third base and in both left field and right field
during the season.

of Catawba, bettered the Conference
record in the hop-step-jump with a
leap of 44 feet 2 inches, but Confer

Danny Pendry Tops Elon
Baseball Team In Hitting
Danny Pendry, a sophomore out
fielder for the Elon Christians, hit
well in late season and led the Fight
ing Christian baseballers in hitting
during a disastrous campaign that
netted only an 8-20 record for the
season overall and a 6-14 mark in
the Conference.

Two Games
At Catawba
It was the day of the bombs —
home run bombs that is—as the Elon
Christians and the Catawba Indians
split a Carolinas Conference double-
header in baseball on the Catawba
field on Friday, May 5th, with the
Christians winning the first game
5 to 3 and the Indians winning the
nightcap 7 to 6 in a pair of tilts that
■saw homeruns account for six runs
for the rival teams.
The homestanding Indians got away
in front in the first encounter as they
plated a single run, but the Elon
baseballers grabbed a 3 to 1 lead of
their own when little Jimmy Freising-
er blasted a three-run homer in the
top of the third rack off the slants
of Catawba’s Ray Hardison, and
Elon went on from that early lead to
win the game by a 5 to 3 margin.
Paul Amundsen opened on the
mound for Elon and got credit for
the victory, although he gave way to
Burgin Beale as a relief hurler dur
ing the final two innings. Amundsen
allowed five hits during his stay on
the mound, but he held the Indians
to two runs, only one of which was
earned.

hitting belonged to Dempsey Herring,
a junior third baseman, who batted
.324 for the year. No other Christian
came within fifty points of those two
leaders, and the Elon squad as a
whole batted only .216 for the season.
Jimmy Freisinger, who played both
shortstop and second base, paced the
team in RBI’s with 14 runners batted
home. He was pushed by Mike Spil
lane and Taylor Duggins, each of
whom batted 10 mates over the plate.
Jimmie Freisinger led the team in
homers with three, while Danny Pen-
dry led in triples with two and in
doubles with four to lead those two
categories.
Chris Pecora, freshman pitcher, ap
peared on the mound in 13 of Elon’s
28 games and got credit for three
wins. Other winning pitchers were
Paul Amundsen with two, and Steve
Bird, Joe Byrtus and Richard You-
mans, each with one victory.
