Girls finish second in CC by Grayson Whitt Elon’s women’s basketball team, or more commonly known as the “Golden Girls” ended thier season last week by flnishing second in the Carolinas Conference Netters lose one, win one by Grayson Whitt The 1978-79 edition of the Elon men’s tennis team is a youthful one. Freshmen' and sophomoreswiU make up the majority of this year’s team However, Coach Don Kelly is optimistic about his squad. “We will be young, but with this youth we should be more enthusiastic and competitive in our play,” noted Kelly. Heading this year’s squad will be Clay Tuck, who will play No. 1 this year. Other team members are Bill Man- ion, Jeff Johnson, Chip Hamrick, Joey Ragsdale, Clay Lester, and David Payne. TTie team opened up their season last week against a tough West Virginia Univer sity team. The Fightin’ Chris tians fell to the Mountaineers by a score of 9-0. Also, last week the netters met Greens boro College. The result was a Elon win (7-2). In singles competition the winners for Elon were. Tuck, Manion, Hamrick and Ragsdale. The Fightin’ Christians also cap tured all three doubles match es against GreensborL Tournament. The “Golden Girls” were defeated by High Point 76-50 in the cham pionship game. With the loss Coach Mary Jackson’s club closed out the season with a 18-8 record. Against High Point the “Golden Girls” were down by only five points at the half to the nation’s number one ranked team However, in the second half the Lady Panth ers blew the “Golden Girls” out of the gym. Vanesa Cor bett led Elon with 18 poinU while Lou Williamson add^ 12. Beth Corbett and Wil liamson were named to the. All-Tournament team. Earlier last week the “Golden Girls” played wdl and blew out their opposition. The Pfeiffer game was the biggest upset in the tourna ment. Leading the “Golden Girls” in this game was Lou Williamson who scored 30 points. Sports Fleming leads netters as spring season opens by Gray Amick and Grayson Whitt Elon College is fielding a womens’ tennis team for the first time since 1974. The team has a split schedule, fall and spring. Elon went 2-6 during the fall half and gained valuable practice and competitive spirit for the up coming spring season. Leading the women netters will be Janet FLeming. A junior, from Eden, Janet is the No. 1 player on this year’s squad. Other team members are Andie Mc Dowell, Kate Jewett, Lori CLark, Karen Wall, and Ann Leisy. These veterans will be joined by three newcomers: freshmen Mary Jean Harrel- son and Mary Beth Hughes and transfer Jennifer Ratch- 5^ m ford. Coach Karen Carden, wife of the Elon wrestling coach, is in her first season as head coach of the women netters. Carden, a 1968 graduate of Elon, is also Elon’s intramu ral director. This is the first women’s tennis team at Elon since 1972-73, when Kay Yow was the headcoach. Coach Carden says “We should be much stronger” concerning her spring squad. She says the team has shown improvement and should be more competitive this spring. The team has desire, deter mination and the willingness to practice, according to Coach Carden. One handicap the Elon squad must face is their inex perience. Since this is the first team since 1974, few players have played on the college level. Elon opens the season Monday, March 12, at 2 p.m. ^ II n ik This week’s Pendnlam Player of the Week b Allen Pritchird. He was named on the basis of a fine performance last week in the baseball team’s opener against the University of North Carolina. Pritchard, a freshman from E^t Greenwich, R.I., threw an impressive 8V3 innings in relief against the Tar Heels. Head Coach Dr. Bob McBee praised his pitcher’s fine performance. “Allen threw extremely well for the first time out. He showed a lot of poise and challenged the batters all day. He has the potential to be a good one.” Diamonders lose close game by Grayson Whitt The Elon College baseball team opened their 1979 sea son with a 9-6 loss to the University of North Carolina last week. It took the Tar Heels thirteen innings before they pulled off the victory. According to Elon Coach Bob McBee, Elon “played well” against the nation’s number three ranked team. Brad Price started the game for the Fightin’ Christians but was knocked out in the first inning. Freshman Allen Prit- Elon Lax drops 0-2 Eloa'i Panl Jammc Hres on South Carolina net In Saturday’s 16-7 loss. by Larry Sondhaus The lacrosse club’s season record dropped to 0-2 last weekend, as a strong South Carolina team handed Elon a 16-7 loss. The game, Elon’s home opener, drew a large and enhusiastic crowd who took advantage of the good weather to come out and see a physical and entertaining match. Elon was led by attackman Dave Landskroener’s three goals. Mid-fielders Keith Scott and Mark Wood were the game’s leading playmak- ers with two assists apiece. Also scoring were Mike O’Mara, Howard Wheatley, Scott Montgomery and Pul Jamme. The game was closer than the score indicated, as use only out-shot Elon by 41-36. South Carolina’s su perb goaltending, however, was more than a match for the Elon offense. This Saturday the lacrosse club travels to East Carolina, still in search of its first win. The next home game for Elon will be against Radford on March 18. chard came in to relieve Price and pitched good ball for innings. Now Coach Mc^ is looking for good so the team will be able play. “The key to this ye«s team is pitching,” Bee. “Man-for-man were better than Carolina.
