March 8, 1979 The Pendulum Page 5 Rod Stewart goes DISCO THeREJSA FEnSNCEl Rod Stewart has put away his rock and roll shoes and brought out his high heels to follow the Bee Gees to where the money is; DISCO. Since the break up of his ex-band, The Faces, Stewart has departed from rock and roll and has yet to settle on ar ecording style. On Tonights The Night, he sang ballads. On Foot-loose and Fancy- Free, he sang commercialized ballads and mediocre rock and roll, but on Blondes Have More Fun, he discos. The best example of this “disco” is the opening cut and single “Do ya Think I’m Sexy.” The song is a second rate Temptations imitation but could probably find a place on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album. The lyrics are perverted and the rhythm section is sloppy with the exception of the saxa- phone sole by jazz artist Tom Scott who incidentally has disgraced himself by being on the album. “Standing in the Shadows of Love” follows the same style of “Do ya Think I’m Sexy.” The sone as first done in the 60’s by the Supremes and Stewards imitation is poor, to say the least. However there are at least two cuts on the .album that are listenable even if they do not sound like the Rod Stew art of old that sang classics such as “Maggie May” or “Handbags and Gladrags.” One of these is “Attractive Female wanted.” The lyrics Survey reflect on loneliness and ex press a yeainping for love. However like the rest of the album his band falls short as an adequate backup. The high point of the album is its final cut “Scarred and Scarred.” It features a harmonica solo and actually attempts to sound like a Rod Stewart song. However, the nine songs that precede it ruin it as a finale. Blondes Have More Fnn is by far the worst album Rod Stewart has ever released. However, he has taken the path that many of his fellow rockers have taken and will disco, riaht into the eighties. It is a shame because Stewart is capable of much better. Concert set for Monday by Joy Hamilton The Elon College Choir and Community Orchestra will present a concert Monday night at 8:30 in Whitley Auditorium. The orchestra, conducted by Malvin Artley, will per form the first portion of the concert. Selections include “Nocturno,” from Mendels sohn’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream.” This slow and melodious work exhibits con trasting dynamics. Handel’s “Song of Jupiter” arranged by Anderson, features Bruce Finer on the trumpet. The strings dominate with brass and woodwind interludes. The Overture from “The Oberon Opera,” a dramatic piece by C.M. Weber, features Fench horn and strings. The orchestra accompanies the college choir for the per formance by Gabriel Faure’s “Requiem.” According to James Glenn, conductor, the requiem is “wonderful exam ple of late romantic compo sition,” and was written in the late 1880’s. The setting of the requiem is the text of “The Mass of the Dead,” portions of which are per formed at funerals ofthe Cat holic Church.
