February 23.19B4 Golden Girls play for CIAC title By Alicia Gadiy Staff Writo- The Golden Giiis fiaished the regular season in a three-way tie for second place in the Carolinas Conference. League offi cials tossed a coin to determine seedings for the conference tournament which begins today at HJSgh Point College. The toss awarded second seed to Atlantic Christian Coll^, with Elon getting the third seed and Hi^ Point the fourth seed. The Golden Girls will play sixth-seeded Guilford Collie at 8 p.m. today. The Golden Girls had a disappointing last week of the season, dropping two of three games. On Valentine’s Day. the Golden Girls traveled to Fayetteville State University. Although the team had three players in dou ble figures, they couldn't manage to pull off a victory. The Lady ' Broncos set Elon back, 74-64. Elon’s Cathy Jones pumped in 19 points, while Jamie McNeely added 15 and Donna Trollinger had 13 points respectively. Two days later, the Golden Girls traveled to Atlantic Christ ian College for a key conference contest Elon, led by Jones’ 21 points, shot the eyes out of the net in the first half, and at the intermission went into the locker-room with a 10 point edge. In the second half, however, the visitors' shooting went cold as ACC outscored the Golden Girls 30 to 14 and took the ball- game 65-57. Overall Elon only shot 35.8 percent McNeely. with 13 points, was the only Elon player besides Jones to hit double figures. After two straight losses, the Golden Girls bounced back and defeated Guilford CoUege, 79-72, behind the sharp shooting of senior Renate Costner. Costner paved the way for the Golden Girls as she poured in an all-time career high at Elon College with 25 points and eight rebounds. Overall the team shot poorly from the floor (39 per cent) but made up for it from the foul line by dropping in 75 percent of their attempts. The other leading scorers for Elon were Jones with 18 points. McNeely with 12 points and Trollinger with 10 points. Head Coach Bob McBee, heading into his ei^th season at Elon, returns seven starters, along with a seasoned pitching staff To handle the demanding schedule of more than 40 games, the Christians will be looking to the team leaders from last year. Leadi^ the way in the out field will be the senior co captain, Joel Weiss, an All- District, All-Area. All- Conference. and Second Team All-American. Weiss batted .436 with 51 hits and 12 home runs. Another standout performer returning is Frank Manship. the All-District and All- Conference third baseman. Manship, a senior from Rock ingham, compiled a .341 bat ting average with four home runs and 17 runs batted in. At shortstop will be David Osteen, a junior from Annville, Pa., who also doubles as one of the top pitchers on the team. Osteen, a hard thrower, re corded a -384 batting average with two home runs and 18 RBFs. Expected to handle re serve duty under Osteen are sophomores Greg Harris and Tim Patton. The battle for the starting second base job is still being waged between junior Jeff Neufang and Patton. Behind the plate will be one of three prospects, and either of whom will be sufficient star ters. McBee said. Leading the way so far is Randy Enoch, a fine batter who ripped his opponents pitching last year at a .329 average. He is facing strong competition fiom Dan Galla^ier and Pikesville Col lege transfer Andy Joyce. The pitching corps consists of several experienced hur- FkaakMaBsUp lers. Gr^ Harris, a sophomore from Siler City, was one of the leading pitchers last year as a freshman when he recorded six wins and two losses with a 3u90 earned mn average. John Driscoll, a junior ri^t- handed thrower like Harris, also had six wins and two los ses, although his ERA was 5l40. Other pitchers who may start for the Christians are Ban; Culberson, a junior who had some nagging shoulder prob lems in 1983.
