II llVlii iiiii mil ■ I The Pendulum Thursday, March 1,1984 Volume X, Number 18 By Loukia Louka Aissociate Editor Joanne Soliday has been appointed to the position of dean of admissions and finan cial aid. She will begin her new duties on June 1 when Dean Marydell Bright retires. Soliday joined the Elon Col lege staff in 1978 as assistant and associate dean of Student Affairs. Since then, she has served as associate director of admissions and associate dean of admissions and financial aid. On her new appointment, Soliday said her biggest goal is to have enough students en rolled at the college. “I want to recruit the best students there are. It doesn’t necessarily mean more students, but rather to have quality students here,” she said. Academic Vice President Chris White described the admissions program at Elon as having “changed dramatical ly” over the last five to seven years. He said, “This is caused by the declining number of high school graduates nation wide, so competition for those graduates has increased. This and other toasts echoed through the Royal Court of James I, in Whitehall, London. Althou^ tbe actual location of the Jacobean Banquet held last Friday, Saturday and Sun day nights was in McKewen Dining Hall, the atmosphere definitely took those who attended away bom this cam pus and back to the year 1622. The whole evening was a slice of life in seventeenth cen tury Britain and included such figures as Prince Charles I, Ben Jonson and Lady Raleigh, widow of Sir Walter Raleigh. The cast included all Elon studesnts either as actors, actresses, singers or musi cians. The presentation was made possible by the research of Dr. Cardon V. Burnham of the Elon College Fine Aits De partment As the audience filled the banquet area, sparkles of can- dle-Ii^t floated in the glass ware and table settings on the white tablecloths of the long tables.
