Twins to perform duo-piano repertoire Duo-pianists Richard and John Contiguglia will perform at the Elon College Fine Arts Theatre on Tuesday, October 25, at 2:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, October 26, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Building office, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The Contiguglias are identical twins who have collaborated as a piano duo since they were 5 years old. An important part of the brother’s careers has been the discovery, performance and recor ding of many unusual and forgot ten works from the duo-piano repertoire. Closely identified with composer Franz Liszt, their Connoisseur Society recording of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony transcribed by Liszt for two pianos was awarded a “Grand Prix” by the Liszt Society of Budapest. In 1986, at the request of the Holland Liszt Festival, they premiered an unpublished duo of Liszt’s Grosses Konzerstuck, which they are responsible for bringing to publication and performance. Loosely based on Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words, the Grosses Konzerstuck is the only original work Liszt wrote for two pianos. It is also one of his most ambitious keyboard pieces. The piece runs 58 manuscript pages and takes approximately 30 minutes to perform. The Contiguglias spent 13 years and thousands of dollars rescuing the previously unplayed composi tion from the dusty shelves of the Liszt museum in Weimar, East Germany. They will perform the magnificent piece during their Elon concert. The concert will begin with Prelude, Fugue and Variation Op. 18 by Cesar Franck.
