The musical focuses around the develi^ment of a romantic *®^^tionship between nurse NpJBg F^ush, played by sc^oih(M\& Un^ Lenoff. and Frenchman Emile DeBecque, played by Glenn Peterson, a retired choral director of Cummings High School Nellie and Emile go through several obstacles in building their relationship, including his children and the murder he ccxnmiited years before, but they are finally united at the end. Review CHi no, another haj^ily ever after song and dance routine, right? WeU, not exacdy. There is some tragedy at the end of the play. For example, a young lieutenant dies and leaves his new-found love behind. That's what makes this musical so exciting. It doesn't leave you with the usual mushy feeling: everybody kisses, makes up at the end, and everything is swell again Not many people lived hqjpily ever after after WWn, and this musical does not try to convince us that it did. It just leaves us the thought that in the midst of tragedy, dreams can be bimt and come true. I was very impressed with the cast and crew. The muacal was full of action, yet everything seemed to run smoothly and naturally. The scenery and w^re unbelievable. In my three years at Elon, Fve nevCT seen such an elaborate play produced here. I hope this was not a one time thing and that the Theatre Arts Department continues to put out siM:h quality plays in tte future. Last but not least, the music for South Pacific" was great. When I heard I was going to review a musical, I have to admit that I rolled my eyes once or twice. To me, musicals always seemed so boring — until this one. The songs were catchy, full of energy, and they were sung with a lot of ^(Mk)n. If you missed "South Pacific," you missed one impressive Elon production. I die next play produced here will present an even finer cast and poformance; however, this oiw is going to be hard to beat YARNS AND THTNq,^ Knitting Yams Cross-stitdi Open daily except Sun. 10.-00am-8:30pm Needlepoint Antiques 10% discount to all students New Market Square 2777 S.
