mSSSSSESBlmEm September20,1990 Page 6 Kem From Page 3 Entertainers are just down to earth and normal people. If you treat them like they are superstars, they’ll back off from you. Learning to accept entertainers as people has helped me a lot. Some of these people, like Chubby Checker, have called me before just because I did treat them normally. They aren't used to that. Pendulum: How important do you believe activities other than those academically oriented are to the student experience at a liberal arts institution? Kern: I think they are vital for a totally well-rounded college experience. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be doing the job I'm doing. You don't get rich doing this kind of job, so you really have to love it and believe that you're making a difference. I believe that each individual has to select a type of activity they want to be in no matter what it is. It's just important to get out there and learn to socialize with people because that is what you are going to have to do when you get out of college. Getting involved leaches you leadership, how to get along with others, and how to deal with conflicts. A lot of times in a classroom, you don't get a chance to do those things. The knowledge you acquire from books and your professors is vital, but as President Young said at the opening convocation to the freshmen, "The two most important things for success in college is to get to know a professor personally and to get involved in campus activities." Pendulum: What would you like to tell everyone about yourself and the upcoming year? Kern: I'm very excited to be here and I’m open to suggestions. I think tradition is important, but I also think it's important to have new and innovative ideas. The SUB can plan the activities, but we need input from other people. We want everyone to participate and tell us if we're not doing a good job. The more the students get involved, the greater the chances are for a positive experience at Elon. $5-8anhovir potential Shoe sales Full time or part time Flexible hours available Contact Brian Newton 227-2010 eoe m-f My Macintosh is more important to me than my car. I lent my car to my sister. But nobod/s talang my Macintosh. m Jason Jimerson B.A. Sociology, Eoriham College M.A. Sociology, University of Virginia Ph.D. Candidate, Sociology, University of Chicago I don t know how anybody gets through college today without a Macintosh. Sometimes I have so many assignments that I barely have time for sleep. Yet my Macintosh allows me to get my work done on time-without making sacrifices. “Working on my dissertation and field studies means collecting an incredible amount of infomiation. So jumping from one program to another with ease is imperative, as is quickly making charts and graphs. By enabling me to do these things, Macintosh probably saves me an hour and a half each day “Another great thing about the Macintosh is that it makes you feel technically con fident. Remember putting toys together when you were a kid? Who reads the directions? Nobody You look at the picture of the bike and you know exactly what to do. The Macintosh operates the same way I actually taught a friend to use one in two minutes. What would my life be like without a Macintosh?
