handled the situation quickly and
was looking out for Moore's best
interest
"I was walking down the hall
and she (Moore) pulled my
bandana out of my pocket,”
Russell explained. "She just
pulkul it out for no reason, I heard
that she said she wanted to see
what it meant”
The bandana is a symbol
worn by the members of Kappa
Alpha that has no racial
significance. According to Moore,
she was curious to what the
bandana symbolized and wondered
what would happen if she pulled
it out. After the incident, the two
had words and Russell left
On November 18, the KKK
card was found underneath the door
of Moore’s room. The card said,
"You have been paid a social visit
by the KKK. Don't make the next
visit a business call!”
"I came home from work and
saw the card on my desk, I asked
my roommate where did the card
come from and she told me that
she saw it when she she came into
the room," Moore said. "I knew
immediately who the card was
from.”
”It was just an impulse
thing,” Russell said. ”I didn’t
realize what the card actually said,
I didn't stop to read it."
After receiving the card,
Moore went to her RA and told
her what had happened.
"After 1 told my RA I called
some of my friends. Then I was
told to contact Jana Lynn
Patterson," Moore said.
The punishment that he
received consisted of 100 hours of
community service, banishment
from Staley dormitory, probation

out in classrooms while 35 of the
surveys were returned in the mail.
Sixty percent of the respondents
were female.
"One of the most surprising
parts of the results was the way
that student attitudes toward the
legalization of drugs change as
they progress through school” said
class member Mike Tryon.
"For me, one of the most
surprising parts was the way that
the respondents answered the
question, Elon spends too much
money on campus beautification
and not enough money on student
activities,” said class member
Richard Bishop.
Nearly 14 percent of the
respondents disagreed with the
campus beatification question.
Dr. Arcaro described Ihe class
project as an exploratory survey
bccau!» there was no hypothesis.
Results cross tabulated
through the Systat computer
program revealed that
for the remainder of the school
term and mandatory alcohol
meetings in February.
"I feel the punishment was
fair," Russell said. ”I have
nothing against blacks and as part
of my punishment I have to create
a race relations program. I'd like
to see us do more things ■
together,” Russell continued. "It’s
not bad now but blacks are in their
own little groups and we are in
ours.
The Pendulum contacted
Patterson, however she was unable
to comment because she had to
have clearance from the accused.
During the meeting with
Patterson, Moore was given the
option of either allowing the
punishment be given immediately
or wail and go through a campus
hearing which would have taken
longer.
