No holiday would be complete without a certain angel earning his wings, a certain snowman coming to life, or a certain old tightwad learning to love. These moments on film have become just as much a part of the yulctide tradition as Santa Claus. So when exams are finally over, I look forward to curling up on the couch with a blanket, a mug of hot chocolate, and my favorite holiday videos. There's no better cure for a semester's worth of "bah humbugs," Here are my favorite Christmas videos, all of which are available at the local video store and most of which will be shown on cable 24 hours a day during December. Either way you shouldn't miss these sure-fire winners to put you in the festive holiday spirit. 1. It's a Wonderful Life^ Frank Capra's classic is the ultimate Christmas story. Sure it's on TV constantly, but for good reason. It's uplifting and inspiring. It's what Christmas is all about. 2. Miracle on 34th Street^' Christmas wouldn't be the same without this tale of a doubling child and a doubting world that comes to believe in the magic of Santa Claus. Each time I see it, I wonder again, "What if?" The impish Natalie Wood gave us words to live by, "I Bianca Brock-Smith The Pendulum Diamonds and Pearls, Prince's latest creation, which came out the first of October, is nothing like the music that he has produced in the past. There are songs on this album for fans of all types of music. They range from the stereotypical to the atypical of Prince's style. Get Off is most stereotypical of Prince’s style. It has extremely sexual lyrics, screams, moans and the deep seductive voice he uses in his sexual songs. Stroliin is a step away from Prince's usual style. This slow mellow song sounds more like it belongs on Harry Connick Jr's album than on Prince's. Jug head is the most atypical song on the album. It is a rap song, (if you can believe it), about a new dance. How’s that for versatility. Many of the songs, like Stroliin and Jug head, reflect Prince's new style believe. I believe. It's silly, but 1 believe." The hard-nosed cynics of today could learn a lot from this film. 3. Home Alone^ Already a modern-day classic, Maccauly Culkin's home-front adventures and his wonderful expressiveness bring out the kid in all of us. 4. Prancer ^ This is one you probably haven't seen, but should. Prancer is the moving story of an imaginative little girl who finds one cf Santa's reindeer who has been hurt and nurses him back to health. It's a magical time that will make you want to believe in Santa again. and his new talented and versatile band, the New Power Generation. Prince docs attempt to hold on to some of his old style by using much of the same music from previous albums. These attempts are evident in Insatiable, which has music similar to Adore from the Sign O The Times album and the same style used in International Lover with a side conversation throughout the song. The title cut Diamonds and Pearls is a moderate tempo love song. It utilizes what seems like every instrument created to give it a mellow tender feeling but also uses a dominating drum roll at each refrain to maintain the rock n' roll quality of the song. The addition of the new band seems to be bringing Prince a little closer to the mainstream. In the future, look for new and different things from Prince and his New Power Generation. Briefs 5. A Christmas Carol ^ Dickon's often-told tale of Scrooge and Tiny Tim is always a holiday tradition. Check out George C. Scott's version of the Humbug. 6. Scrooged ^ A sharp satire of A Christmas Carol, Bill Murray and an all- star cast bring a new wit and edge to the familiar tale. Dicken's story may be old, but it's never out of date. There are still a lot of modem Scrooges to poke fun at. 1.National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation V The Griswalds strike again in this crazy continuation of one family's endless foibles. Though the plot is a bit weak, Chevy Chase is always a comedic constant. And sometimes it's good to get up in the face of the holiday madness and just have a good laugh. 8. All Christmas specials ^ Rudolph, Charlie Brown, Frosty, and the Grinch are now all available on video. Enough said. 9. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles^ Okay, this one's really about getting home for Thanksgiving, not Christmas. But Steve Martin and John Candy's hair-raising holiday mishaps are hilarious for any season. ' 10. White Christmas V This romantic and funny musical starring Danny Kaye and Bing Crosby is probably my very favorite. The memorable song and dance numbers bring the film to life and never fail to do the same for me. These holiday favorites are the perfect remedy for the post-exam, run ragged, Christmastime blahs. Statewide NCSL meeting held Elon College hosted the statewide interim council meeting for the North Carolina Student Legislature the weekend of November 22-24. Students from across the state gathered to discuss self-written resolutions and issues facing North Carolina. Charles Dunn, director of the NC State Bureau of Investigations, was also on hand to discuss crime issues. Bring joy with Toys for Tots The leadership honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa, is sponsoring a toy drive for Toys for Tots to give underprivileged children a brighter Christmas. ODK is requesting that students bring by new unwrapped toys to the front desk of the LRC. For more information, contact Brian Allen at 378- 1542. Review: Prince CD shows new versatility
