' ‘ ^ Move over, Miss America Greek Man of the Year to become annual tradition Tricia Talbert The Pendulum Miss America and Miss USA arc common female beauty pageants, but what about the Greek Man of the Year? The male beauty contest made its eye-opening debut on Friday night. Excitement and enthusiasm appeared on the face of senior Bill Hanckel when he was crowned Elon College Greek Man of the Year on Friday. "I was so excited and really shocked when they announced that I had won. It was quite a night," Hanckel said. Hanckel was awarded a crown, roses, and a $50 gift certificate to Record Town. The sisters of Zeta Tau Alpha sponsored the first annual Greek Man of the Year contest, with all proceeds benefitting the Association for Retarded Citizens. Hanckel, Phi Mu sweetheart, competed against 11 other contestants in the event. Eight fraternities and four sororities were represented. First runnerup went to Sigma Phi Epsilon's representative Mike Pyle, who received a $25 gift certificate to The Village Cafe. Each contestant was required to make his own sash to identify his organization, perform a talent, answer a question chosen at random, and strut their stuff by showing off their legs and buns. The different sashes were bright and eye-catching, adding quite a twist to the competition. Art Dornik, representing Kappa Sigma, sported a sash covered with bows of all colors and sizes. The interview section helped the judges and the audience see which male was quickest on his feet. Questions ranged from "what article of clothing would you want be and why?" to "arc you a toilet paper folder or a crumbier?" The audience saw a little bit of everything in the talent competition. Art Domik, the Kappa Sigma representative tugged at the hearts of females in the audience with his solo version of Nat King Cole's Unforgettable. Hanckel did an / Dream of Jeannie imitation, using the theme song from the show. Mike Pyle got the audience to sing along during his lip sync to Garth Brook's hit Friends in Low Places and then picked up the pace with Guns 'n Roses' Sweet Child Of Mine. "It was so cool to be able to pretend 1 was Axl Rose for a night," Pyle said. In the legs and buns competition, the contestants moved to the rhythms of hit tunes and had the audience clapping and screaming to show support for their favorite contestant. "This was a great idea and it wasn't just your basic fund ^raiser," Alpha Omicron Pi sweetheart Greg Gillette said. "It was an exciting, fun way to raise money to help others, and at the same time unite the Greek organizations." "We worked really hard on this event and it was a great opportunity to get all of the Greeks working together for a great cause," said Sarah Rogers, coordinator of the event. "With everyone's support we were able to raise $600 for our national philanthropy, the A.ssociation for Retarded Citizens."
