Cultural Connection Pj^e 7 Lenny Kravitz Kravitz's new album is full of variety i Lenny Kravitz Brian Tane The Pendulum Are You Gonna Go My Way is the latest release from retro reviver Lenny Kravitz. Although bits and pieces of songs are taken from some of Kravitz’s major influences, he makes sure he doesn’t cross the fine line between imitation and originality. Kravitz’s sound hovers around lale sixties classic rock and early seventies soul hits combined with a special touch of his own. Although the title track bears a striking resemblance to Hendrix’s Ezy Rider, there is an irresistible hook which allows you to look past the likeness of his predecessor. Is There Any Love in Your Heart is the only other song on the album with the up-tempK) thrust of the title track, but My Love and Come On arc exceptional rcvampings of that classic groove sound. The two biggest standouts on the album, however, are the seven minute gem Sister and Kravitz’s first reggae endeavor, Eleuiheria, an intensive Success. With the opening line of ^leutheria, “My life is perfect because I Accept it as it is,” Kravitz captures the essence of happiness in solitude while intertwining the feel into a laid back *'5ggaebcaL Sister on the other hand is an Acoustic-based UlUe diuy which you hate *0 hear end. As the song evolves, the bare Acoustic sound bccomes layered with flayed wah-wah as well as drowned-out moans, which complement the floating electric guitar solo. All this is tucked behind the sympathetic lyrics of a man pleading for forgiveness. Other songs such as Believe anfl Sugar capture the aura of the early seventies as well as being virtual recreations of his 1991 hit. It A'ini Over 'til it's Over. Although Lenny Kravitz doesn’t conquer any new ground in inventing a new sound, no one should dismiss his efforts. Kravitz has developed tremendously as a songwriter over the past few years which is clearly demonstrated on his new album. Are you gonna go my way? You better believe it, Lenny.
