November 18,1993 10 Love School gains prominence Mona Covington Reporter The Love School of Business is home to 20 percent - nearly 650 - of Elon’s 3,200 undergraduate students, more than any other department on campus, acceding to the latest reports from the registrar’s office. The reports also indicate that about 25 percent of degrees awarded over the last five years were in one of the business areas - economics, accounting, business administration and masters of business administration. A $1 million endowment given by the Martha and Spencer Love Foundation to name the school in the mid-1980s has made the business program more attractive to Students and faculty, said Dr. Bob Guffey, dean of the Love School of Business. Income from the endowment supplements business faculty salaries and provides limited travel expenses, which increases Elon’s i ability to compete with larger or more well-known schools to attract the most qualified faculty, Guffey said. Because of the increased salaries and benefits, there has been “a dramatic increase in the qualifications of the faculty,” said Guffey. Of the 21 business faculty members, 12 hold the highest degree in their field (usually a doctorate) and five are working on dissertations. Higher faculty qualifications mean a better education for students and an excellent reputation with prospective employers. Guffey said several of the most highly respected accounting firms in the United States provide internships for many Elon students and recruit Elon graduates regularly. Sonny Wilburn, president of the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce, said the business programs and M.B.A. are an asset to the local business community in two significant ways. They can help existing businesses become more efficient by training employees to be better managers. Also, the Love School is a good selling tool when attracting new businesses to Alamance County because it offers further education for their employees. “This (program) is definitely a strength in our area to make us more competitive than areas without such a program,” Wilburn said. Funds from the Love Foundation endowment have also enabled the school to expand its offering of business programs, said Guffey. The M.B.A. program was added to the Love School in 1985 with a handful of students and an all- evening-classes schedule. This semester, 110 students are enrolled for M.B.A. classes. Of that number, 95 percent are professionals who work in Alamance County or surrounding areas. Eloil plans library expansion Christy Earnhardt Reporter Elon College has plans for the Iris Holt McEwen Library to add a 20,000 square foot wing by the year 1997. Dr. P. Alston Jones Jr., head librarian at Elon, said the library is about 30,000 square feet and the new wing addition will almost double the size of the library. “Building the wing is the next step on Elon’s agenda for the ‘90s plan,” says Pat Kinney, director of publications and public information. Gerald Whittington, vice president for business and finance, said that over the past two years Elon has been receiving suggestions from the students, staff and faculty about what they wanted to see in the library. Ariannc Ttoy, an Elon student who works in the library, said. “We’re a growing school and the libraof needs to grow with it” • A library committee consisting of students, faculty and staff was formed to develop a program of activities for the library so that the requests from the community could be met The committee was assisted by the architectural firm of Little & Association and a professional librarian consultant from Davidson College. Whittington says that the committee concluded the new library needs to: have more room for patrons to accommodate the growing population of Elon College; provide more space for the books; have space for new seminar and group study rooms; have the library house whatever the latest technology is at the time the addition is built; and the library has to meet all federal and state regulatory requirements for life, health and fire safety. The expansion costs will be covered as part of Elon’s capital campaign so it will not affect student tuition. The exact length of construction time is unknown, but Jones estimates it at a little over a year.
