April 14,1994 ■ GufTey From Page 1 Elon College President Fred Young announced April 8 that the search had begun for a new vice president of Academic Affairs after Francis was named the new pro vost. Young said the college would accept applications from internal candidates. Faculty and staff had specu lated that Guffey would be a candi date for Francis’s former position. “I do not want Dr. Francis’ s old job,” Guffey said. ■ Adviser From Page 1 and Phi Psi Cli, receives funds from the college and SGA. Hanke said her new role as SGA adviser will be hard work, but she is excited about it. “My role as an adviser is to challenge and support,” Hanke said. “1 think I am an advocate for stu dents.” ■ Cable From Page 1 Students that want the premium channels must contact Cablevision of Alamance County. Elon College will be adding four new channels including SCOLA, a foreign language news channel which will replace ACTS/ VISN, the religious chaiuicl. The Elon Information Channel will re place the QVC Home Shopping Channel, and ECTV will be added. The fourth channel has not yet been decided, but Fulkerson said, “With the way ECTV is grov/ing, we may need another channel.” Fulkerson also said that the Qble Act of 1992 caused Elon to pay for all local channels and ser vice and there were also restric tions. This forced the college to invest more money which was not economically feasible. Another problem was that in the past, not enough students bought the service, creating amonetary loss for the college. The pressed channel line-up is being worked out technically and legally with Alamance Cablevision. The technical upgrading of cable will be done this summer, and residents living on campus will have the new service in the fall. Students are strongly advised to bring cable- ready televisions. Head of Cable Repair and Maintenance Steve Holt said, “We’ve wanted the idea for a long time, but cable was neva inter ested. Now they have a lot of sub scribers.” Holt also said that one of the benefits of the proposal is the main tenance service. r “Every service call goes to cablevision, not the Elon switch board. We used to have to go from room to room and troubleshoot, but this will save us personnel time,” Holt said. He said another benefit is that everyone will be connected to the basic and extended service, so there will not be confusion about hook ups when students are moving into their rooms. There will not be any cable theft because everyone will have the hook-up. Extended channeling also al lows technological advances in cable for students in years to come. Holt said, “This will be a much more convenient way for students to have cable, and for us to get our work done. But if students are dissatisfied with the service, they need to let us know,” Holt said. S.
