The weekend, sponsored by the Black Cultural Society, is an event geared towards attracting more black students to the college. “On regular visitation days, there are not a large number of Black students,” said David Bynes, Black Cultural Society president. “A lot of times, people don’t hear of Elon,” Bynes said. “In the last couple of years, Elon’s name has been thrown out there and it makes them (prospective students) feel special that they are presented the (^portunity to come here.” The weekend was geared towards showing the prospective students many aspects of life at Elon. Sev eral events were planned to give a sense of diversity. The events started April 15 with a mixer at The Back Door. An official welcome began April 16 with visitations, tours including talks with admissions and fmancial planning, and entertainment. “On Saturday, we wanted the students to have an opportunity to learn more about student life at Elon College,” Latonya Birch, director of Multi-Cultural Affairs said. During a picnic on Saturday, the students were presented with a va riety showcase on the patio of the Varsity Grill. The showcase included singing, dancing, and poetryreadings. Along with the showcase, a panel of stu dents from Elon were available to answer questions. “The ‘Student Life at Elon Col lege’ panel will be an opportunity to let students get a perspective from currently enrolled students,” Birch said. On April 16, the African Ameri can Extravaganza was held in an effort to give a historical perspec tive of African American origins. “The event is just an (^portunity to give students a choice.
