THE Pendulum til.- j— Rodgers elected SGA president; Biggest voter turnout in years Stacey Ward Staff Reporter Tonya HubarVThe Pendulum Newly elected SGA President Michael Rodgers gets an early start on next years work. VP candidates still being evaluated Michael Rodgers, current SGA executive secretary and a rising Junior, was elected SGA president by 51 votes in last week’s elec tions. It was the largest turn-out in the past three years. Nine hundred twenty-nine students voted. Last year only 750 students voted. Sen. Kelley Parker said it was good to “see people turning out. It offers hope.” Rodgers said he was told that he is the first minority president and he is the first non-greek SGA president in a number of years. Rodgers said Tuesday that the three elected executives have be gun planning for next year. The major goal it to have a monthly up date with faculty, staff, administra tion and students offering feedback on campus concerns, he said. “It's a big commitment I’m prepared. I want to put a lot of time into the job. It’s time to take re- sponsibilily.” Rodgers said. Ward Culver was elected Stu dent Government Association vice president. Culver’s platform deals with Elon coming together as a com munity, having students work better together, using the Moseley Center more effectively and sup porting campus organiiations. There will be a run-off for executive treasurer today from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Moseley Center. Julius John and Dan Th ompson will run for the office. See SGA. Page 4 Amy Logerwell Asst. Managing Editor One of the four candidates for the aca- dcmic vice president’s job has dropped out of the race to take a job elsewhere. Provost Gerald Francis said Tuesday he hopes to make an announcement at Fnday’s faculty meeting about who will get the job. but said he “truly doesn’t know.” Francis has been evaluating the candi dates for more than a month. Richard Bernard, vice president for Aca demic Affairs and history professor at Simpson College in Iowa, has decided to lake a job with Niagara University in New York, officials at Simpson College said Tues- day. Bernard was out of town and unavail able for comment. Julianne Maher, dean of City College and associate professor of linguistics at Loyola University in New Orleans, said she was uncomfortable commenting about the issue. “I’m waiting eagerly for the process to finish and come to an end.” Maher said Tuesday. Tour DuPont cycles through Elon on Sunday Jeff Wirick Staff Reporter The Tour DuPont, which goes through Elon College Sunday. enters its seventh year in 1995, following its most successful year according lo a Tour DuPont news release. Last year 2 million spectators witnessed the cycling race, and more than 200 million watched on local, national and international television during the 12-day event. ESPN and ESPN II will cover the race daily and CBS will also cover (he final day, which ends in Greensboro. The 1995 Tour DuPont began on Apnl 26 in Wilmington. Del., an^goes through Virginia, South Carolina and three other stops in North Carolina before it finishes with the Burlington-Greensboro time trial Sunday.
