Amy Logerwell Managing Editor With their minds full of expec tations and their arms full of cloth ing, lamps and compact discs, new Elon College students ventured to their residence halls Aug. 22. This year, about 920 new stu dents entered the college bringing enrollment figures to about 3,500. Last year, 930 freshmen came to Elon. Freshman roommates Mely nda Cutler and Kelly Elton moved into their third floor room in West last week. By mid-morning they had their bunk beds stacked atid were preparing to put clothes away. “It was hot moving in, but I am definitely ready for this,” said Cut ler, who is from Morrestown, N.J. Cutler and Elton were matched as roommates through the com puter selection process residence life does each year. They talked on the phone during the summer be fore meeting for the first time last Tuesday. After helping her father con struct her loft bed, Georgia resident Sara Petelik said she is ready for college life. “I’m a little nervous, but this is better than Georgia,” Petelik said, referring to moving into a new place. “At least there is a breeze here.” Petelik said she is thrilled to live in a room wired for the Internet. Andy Stefanowicz said he had no problem moving into his room in Moffitt Residence Hall. In three hours, he and his parents had his room completely set up, including posters on the walls. “So far I’m pretty happy,” said Stefanowicz, who is from Westford, Massachusetts and plans to major in business. He said he wanted to come to Elon because he loves North Caro lina. Hugging her parents as they were departing for Connecticut, Jenn Blanchard shed a few tears, but said she was ready for her par ents to leave. “I’m the youngest girl and they have been very protective,” Blanchard said while walking away from her parents car. Director of Residence Life Alice Ledford said everything went very smoothly on moving-in day. “We made multiple requests for removing beds and repairs and the physical pjant was outstanding handling those requests,” Ledford said. “Everything went beautifully with our staff.” Room assignments were mailed to students July 1. On July 15, maintenance and staff began training and on Aug. 12 the Com munity Development Coordinators began preparing. “Last year I couldn’t count on my fingers and my toes how many frustrated parents and students we had,” Ledford said. “This year we only had four.” See New Students, Page 4. Tailgating with the Fightin* Christians offer pregame warm-up for football fans —who doesn t want to drive, shuttles will be Stacey Ward Staff Reporter Tailgating is no longer just a homecom ing event. Tailgating with the Fightin’ Christians will occur at every home game. Participating students will be permitted to enter a specially marked parking lot 1 1/2 hours before kickoff, said Student Govern ment Association President Michael Rodgers. The festivities should come to a close about 10 minutes before kickoff. SGA is working with Student Union Board to provide entertainment for the fes tivities. A disc jockey will provide music until kickoff, Rodgers said. Interested students should sign up for a designated parking spot in the Student Gov ernment Association office. Each group of students will receive two spaces. Single parking spaces will be available for smaller groups of students. For anyone running from the Moseley Center parking lot. Transportation will be provided both ways. The idea behind the tailgating is to get more students involved and to help “raise school spirit,” Rodgers said. Students will be required to wear a wrist band if they are of drinking age. Each group is also required to designate a driver for the evening. Burlington police will be on hand in case they are needed. Police officials will not check IDs as long as students stay within the designated area, Rodgers said. Once the game has started, police will then check for identi fication. In order to participate, each group must provide one recycle receptacle and one gar bage receptacle. TTiey will also be respon sible for cleanmg up their area. Any group which does not clean up will pay a $20 fine. Each group must have people signed up to clean their area. VP charts course for school year Amy Logerwell Managing Editor Working with students and faculty to make the Elon College campus a better learning environment is one of many objec tives for the new vice president of Aca demic Affairs. Juliannc Maher stepped into the role July 17 after a year-long search and deci sion process by Elon faculty and adminis trators. Maher was the dean of City College at Loyola University in New Orleans and can be credited with helping to double the en rollment at City College during her seven year tenure. Topping Maher’s agenda at Elon is hiring a new dean of the business school, a new head librarian, implementing curricu lum plans, and designing new general stud ies courses. Maher has observed the campus duri ng the past month and read department, aca- Julianne Maher demic and institutional information to edu cate herself about the college. Though she said she still needs more time to leam about the college and how it is run, she has come up with a few conclu sions. “This college is really a community, notjustacollection of departments,” Maher said during an interview last week. “It is very unusual because other colleges are very fragmented. “People care for one another and that comes across in the faculty that are brought See Maher, Page 4.
