The grant, which was awarded by the U.S. Department of Educa tion Undergraduate Interna tional Studies and Language Program, is worth over $150,000. Asian studies is one of the concentrations that In ternational Studies majors can choose. Pullium feels that Asian studies are important be cause, “So much is happen ing in Asia. You know Elon has gone increasingly glo bal but if you look, all the courses and programs are still in a European direction...There will be more' focus on Asia in the next decade. It will make the region hard to ignore.” Included in the plans for developing the Asian studies program is the hir ing of a full-time Japanese professor this summer. Pullium said they were look ing for someone who not only knew the language, but who would work well with students and could increase the enrolment. “I feel that motivating students is the main part of teaching languages,” Pullium said. English, ecoinomics and psychology departments make curriclum changes Michelle Cater, Letters Editor Some changes were made in the Elon College curriculum at the faculty meeting on April 5. One main change was in the requirements for an econom ics minor. The new requirements give students their choice between Intermediate Macroeconomic Theory and Interme diate Microeconomic Theory. Another change made in the minor is that taking a statistics class is no longer required. Jim Barbour, the chair of the economics department, said that this change was made because “it makes the minor more accessible to students who are not business minors.” A few new courses were added to the English department as well. One of the new additions is an internship in teaching literature, Eng. 382. This class is for English majors only and will allow them an opportunity to help a professor teach a literature class. Another addition to the English curriculum is English 210, a writing workshop. This class will focus on developing the skills taught in Eng. 110. The last addition to the English curriculum is English 348, Mark Twain. This class will study the life and writings of Twain. See Changes, page 4
