8 February 5,1998 Featuies Expression through movement: Students learn world dances Carolyn Lampila Pendulum Reporter The winter term allows Elon students to take interesting courses that are usually not offered during the fall and spring semesters. One of these courses is Dance in Wor ship taught by Professor Jane Wellford. Dance in Worship “in itself is about dance and how it is used in worship in many cultures,” said Wellford. The class studied various world dances, including the dance of Shiva, which is used in India to express the Hindu faith, many Af rican tribal ritual dances, and sev eral Hebrew dances from the scrip tures. The class studied worship dances of several civilizations from primitive civilization to the 20th century, although there is an emphasis on Christian worship dances of the last 2000 years. Wellford said that not all the dances studied are about the Judeo-Christian God. “Dances in worship are also in Native Ameri can societies, about the Great Spirit, of course, but also about the spirits of human nature, and ani mals,” she said. Senior Michael Stamps said, “I learned a lot more about how different churches and differ ent places welcome dance into their worship services.” 27 students took Dance in Worship. It was a mixture of males Jenny Jarnecke/777e Pendulum and females, dancers and non-danc ers. Wellford said the class took up the entire three hours every day, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wellford usually lectured for 45 minutes, showed a video for 40 minutes, and the rest of the class was reserved for the study of movement. During this time, the students examined several different movement postures, including prayer, joy, repentance, touch and questioning. Parables, psalms, scrip tures, and prayers were set to readings and music, and the students would then in terpret dance moves. Wellford has been teaching at Elon for 23 years, and has taught Dance in Wor- ship for five years. She has stud ied liturgical dance for 25 years and currently directs and performs in “Moving Liturgy,” a perform ing company that tours churches. The students in Dance in Wor ship performed at Elon Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 25, Wellford said that Pastor Mark Fox, also an Elon professor, asks the group to per form at Celebration each year. This year the class performed three dances. First, they performed The Kingdom, a Christian dance, which uses the tripudium step— three steps forward, signifying the positive aspect of man’s life, and one step backwards, symbolizing man’s occasional setback. They then performed an ab stract dance in which they used their own postures to reflect their daily living. Finally, they danced to the song “Father, we Adore Thee.” PRESIDENT'S LIST The faculty and administration congratulate the following students on their acheivements in the fall semester.
