October 1,1998 Profile Helvey makes the important things matter Hillary Sherman The Pendulum Imagine your teacher required you to meet with her for ten to fifteen minutes at the beginning of the semester to “get to know you.” Then picture yourself enter ing her office, looking around and wondering what you’ve gotten your self into as you sit yourself down. Then the first question comes, “What’s your story?” For students in Laura Helvey’s political science and women's studies classes this isn’t a fantasy, it’s reality. Helvey has taught political science, international relations, comparative politics and politics of Europe and Asia at Elon for the last six years. And like many of the stories Helvey evokes from her students with her question during their inter view, her life is full of rich and exciting activities. Upon graduating from high school Helvey entered Duke Uni versity. After her first year, she de cided the Blue Devils weren't for her and transferred to Emory University in Georgia where she majored in political communica tion. She later went on to get her doctor ate from Stanford. In addition to teaching, Helvey con tributes to the Elon community in many ways. As an adviser to Model United Na tions, she takes stu dents to conferences and performs simula tion sessions for Glo bal Experiences each semester. Working with political this group has lead Helvey to discern that Elon stu dents are "wonderful, and if you demand a lot they will usually come through.” Helvey will be an adviser for SPECTRUM, a group designed to Jenny Jarnece/T/je Pendulum science professor Laura Helvey talks with a student. support gay and lesbian students, for the third time this year. “I just feel that they should be treated like humans too,” Helvey said, “and this organization is de signed to support them and to teach awareness. Helvey devotes much of her time to her role as President of the Board of Directors for Child Care Resource and Referral. As a parent of two young children, Helvey involves herself with this organization which looks to ensure that quality and afford able childcare is available for par ents of the area. Helvey’s devout love of poli tics has also led her to get involved in the Alamance Woman’s Political Caucus. Currently, Helvey is also ed iting a book through the Carter Cen ter about the role of television in democracy. Her former involvement with the Carter administration is helping her cause. Helvey enjoys playing recre ational tennis every once in a while, but “honestly, I don’t have much time to,” she said. In the future Helvey hopes to do more work on democratization, especially the aspects associated with a free press and media. Her desire for her future at Elon is to “be a good teacher and give students the tools necessary to make a difference.” “I want my students to be able to go out and do something mean ingful,” Helvey said.
