The Pendulum Opinion Thursday, October 24, 200‘2 • Page 3 Campus authorities overlook African-American population President Lambert needs to attend more events to personally promote diversity on campus Di iversity, what is it? This I is a question that I have been deahng with as an African-American student at a predominantly white institution. While at Elon I’ve been involved in numerous campus organizations, inducted into many honor societies and have been an overnight host to prospective high- school students. Elon has become my home and there are a lot of things I love about this school. However, I have some concerns that need to be addressed and until they are, I will not be able to stand behind this image 1 have been selling. I realize that my definition of xliversity has diminished profuse ly since coming to Elon. Diversity of color and culture brings with it.diversity in thought, religion, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. After being at Elon, I now find myself rejoicing about the diver MAILBOX sity of a class of 30 that contains at least one other African- American. I believe that something is wrong with this. One of the "pri orities” of Elon for the 2002-2003 school year is to increase minori ty enrollment and expand minori ty recruitment. While these are noble aspira tions, I believe that we need some internal housekeeping before we recruit more minorities to this campus. As a student leader, who just so happens to be a minority, 1 feel it is my responsibility to bring awareness to issues I that are being overlooked. I don’t believe that people in authority of this institution, whether they are in student gov- ernment or in administration, truly understand the importance of having a diverse campus, nor do they understand the measures that need to be taken to achieve it. Yes, scholarship money will help attract more African- American students, but what will be done to support them when they get here? There is much more to diversity than political correctness and accreditations. We need to realize that constant exposure to diversity enhances our education. This lack of exposure is the missing element of the Elon Experience. As the student intern for the Office of Multicultural Affairs, I plan many events and often am the contact person for many of the activities we support. While working in the office I have had .the opportunity to inter act with a number of senior staff members and faculty around cam pus, but there has been one person who has not graced us with his presence in the past few years. That person is the president of this wonderful university. President Leo Lambert has done wonders for this school and has made an effort to support numerous events on campus. I’ve seen him at sporting events, cultural performances and most recently while attending a luncheon with the Advisory Board for the School of Communications. With the exclusion of the Martin Luther King celebration last year, Lambert has not been there to support anything spon sored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs or the direc tor of minority recruitment since his first year in office. He has not attended SMART orientation, he does not attend any of the events during the Minority Student Visitation Weekend and he has not attended the Black Excellence Awards Banquet, which honors all .African- Americans with a 3.0 or higher. Yes, I know our president is a busy man, but if diversity were a priority on his agenda, wouldn’t he make the events that support diversity a priority as well? Yes, we want to bring more diversity to our campus, but what about supporting the diversity that is already here? - LaToya Marcus Junior Leaders of the United States craving a dominance of the world In the ongoing effort to create a United World of America, President George W. Bush and his two mem ber advising committee starring Attorney General John Ashcroft and a cardboard cutout of Vice President Dick Cheney have success fully knifed the legal principles of the _ European Union by exempting the United States from war-crime trials in the International Criminal Court (ICC). Robert Wielaard of Associated Press repoHed, EU nations may invoke immunity agreements for U.S. civilians - politicians. Defense Department Personnel, CIA Staffers and oth ers,” including rapists, murderers, assassins, members of Alcoholics Anonymous, pedophiles and Noelle Bush to keep Iheni oiit of the ICC. Human rights , groups denounced the move as caving into American pressure at the expense Austin Jameson the "The of the war-crimes tribunal. However, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fisher said the EU compromise was important. In a state ment reported in the Seattle Times on Oct. 1, Joschka added, “The Milosevics and Pinochets of tomorrow will be brought to justice,” where by continuing his stance on never making any sense. Removing themselves from tlie ICC is jast one way the U.S. government is working to secure America's Empire. In his .speech to the United Nations on Sept. 30, Bush stated, "I ui^e you Kxlay, do not let our lega cy die. Allow us to continue our long tradition of getting our way.” In response, a poll was taken by the National Statistical Research Institute - having earlier deter mined 78 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot -found 68 percent of Americans in support for Bush’s plans for a global America and 100 percent of non- Americans strongly opposed. The U.S. government is howl ing to the UN for support of Bush’s “U.S. Does What It Damn Well Pleases” plan that would give the U.S. the authority to do whatever it wants wherever it wants at any time. After Sept. 11 so many nations gave the U.S. their condo lences and kindness the administration finally realized America’s image of being the only coun try that matters, all other nations being simply lumped together into a form less, foreign Other. When approved, the U.S. will immedi ately launch inva sions of Iraq, Cuba, the American frontier lands and Great Britain; establish oil-drilling rigs in Alaska; make English the official language of the planet; tear down the Statue of Liberty and imprison every Arab nationalist in the U.S. on temporary visas; nuke Japan again along with North Korea; begin each day with a with a moment of world wide prayer and pro hibit Germany and Australia from mak ing automobiles. Finished outlin ing his plans. Bush stated in a press con ference “The lunacy is finally over. “We can now anticipate a bright nuclear dawn not seen since the glori ous days of my dad.” However, Gulf War II, Bush’s answer to Saddam Hussein for having such a silly name, is being delayed by an unusually defiant France. Julia Preston of the New York Times reported on Oct. 18, “The United States today offered France KRT Campus what it called a final proposal for a Security Council resolution to dis arm Iraq, seeking to break a dead lock that threatened to paralyze the United Nations.” In an argument between Secretary of State Colin Powell and French Ambassador Jean- David Levitte, Powell made incen diary comments towards Levitte, prompting him to hide in a comer and cry like a little giri, Powell noted further the U.S. gives France permission to be the first nation to surrender in the event of war with Iraq, continuing their policy on losing every war they get them selves into. After the success of U.S. glob alization, John Ashcroft will lead Bush and the cardboard cutout of Cheney in a rousing rendition of “Momma Said Knock You Out,” with Bush reading from a teleprompter in a vain attempt to use correct grammar and Cheney’s inanimate likeness will suffer a demoralizing heart attack.
