Art professor Michael Sanford said that the sculpture represents an “important part of the student’s educational experience.” Every two years, the sculptures outside of the Model Center are changed with the intention of presenting a diverse selection of visual art to the University community. The acquisition of “The Vortex” was made possible by donations from Stephen C. Charles and the class of 2003. “The sculpture program is part of the rich and varied cultural programs that the University provides for its students,” Sanford said. In keeping with the University’s tradi tion of excellence in artistic presentations, “The Vortex” was brought to the grounds with the same educational expectations that are in place when a symphony or dance company is invited to campus. Sanford explained that the statue was chosen because when displayed in con junction with the other statues on campus, the combination “presents an interesting variation of form and materials.” With the new cast-bronze statue of the Phoenix, and several other sculptures made of materials like stainless steel and marble, this piece stands out because of its wood and stone composition. “This was an opportunity to bring in art that was produced by a professional visu al artist,” Sanford said. The piece can be seen from several vantage points on cam pus, which allows the community to “see art from different perspectives.” Sanford also explained that the sculp ture in front of Moseley will be rotated next year in the hopes that the University will be able to broaden the students’ artis tic exposure even further.
