The Alumni Association gather ing entered its second year, with alumni meeting in Whitley Auditorium to receive an update on the happenings of the university and to hear a speech from Lambert. At the event Alumni Association awards were given to From page 1 teaching methods. The 2003 NSSE report was relea.sed Nov. 10 and showed 83 percent of Elon graduates have participated in a study abroad experience while at Elon. The report also showed that 90 percent of Elon students have completed at least one internship or co-op. Waters said having the Elon Experiences transcript available online will help increase aware ness about the document. “We’re trying to put the tran script into the planning part of a students career,” Waters said. “We want to increase awareness’and participation across the curricu lum.” Waters said that he feels having the transcripts available online will also encourage advisers to use them during their meetings with students each .semester. The Elon Experiences tran script is designed to serve as a companion document for job and graduate school applications. The document lists participation in five areas - study abroad, service, leadership, intemships/co-ops and research. However, not all of the experiences qualify for the tran script. Waters said that each department on campus that moni- tors the five areas must validate each experience to see if it is eligi ble to be listed on the transcripts. “With service, for example, a lot of our students do service work at home that we never know Dan Bolden, Times-News editor emeritus; Eddie Bridges, wildlife activist and 1957 Elon graduate and Elizabeth Cooper, communi cations coordinator at the University of Florida and 2002 Elon graduate. In recent years, affinity group reunions have grown in impor tance, especially with larger class es, Roper said. Affinity groups are fraternities, sororities or other organizations. Waters said that the transcript works in conjunction with Eton’s Web-based portfolio program offered through the Center for Leadership and Organizational trend, Roper said, is an increase in attendance by younger alumni. “Loyalties,” Roper said, “may be not to a class - but to groups.” It is hard to get exact estimates of returning alumni, Roper said, because there are so many that do not register and only go to the foot ball game or gather somewhere off campus. Lebanon Avenue disturbance call results in breach of security procedures, police investigate details of incident From page 1 Sheriff’s Department to look at calls they received Sunday morn ing, hoping to find out what went wrong. “There’s no street light in front of our house,” Strunsky said. “So, we really couldn’t see who was out there.” So, they called Elon Campus Safety and Police. “We said, ‘Hi, I live in a house on Lebanon,”’ Strunsky said. “And the person said, ‘Well, we don’t really deal with that.’ And then they hung up.” And while Lebanon Avenue is considered off campus. Director of Campus Safety and Police, Chuck Cantos, said this is not the expected response. “That shouldn’t have been the response,” he said. “This is not normally what would happen with protocol.” Gantos said Carol Straughn, the adult dispatcher on duty at the time or another dispatcher handling calls, should have said, “Give us the information, and we’ll call the town police dis patch.” Campus Safety and Police also have no record that Strunsky ever made the call to the dis patcher, Gantos said. Strunsky also was not asked to provide her name or campus box, another breach in normal proce dure, Gantos said. “It was scary,” Strunsky said. “And that’s why they needed to do something. Nobody explained why they couldn’t do anything. We were just told they didn’t really deal with things like this. But what do you deal with, if not this?” Strunsky and Whicker made a second call to the Town of Elon Police at about 2:20 a.m. and were told there were some check points in the area, set up to kick off the Click It or Ticket Campaign, which could be the cause of the ruckus outside their house. The checkpoint was at the intersection of Haggard Avenue and Oak Street, in front of Elon Elementary. That shouldn’t have been the response. This is not normally what would happen with protocol. —Chuck Gantos, director of campus safety and police But Maj. Tim Flack with the Burlington Police Department media relations said there shouldn’t be any marked or unmarked cars away from the check point unless those officers were pursuing a vehicle. “Surely, if anyone in the driveway was a cop, they would have come lo the door when they were done, but they didn’t,” Strunsky said. “So, we thought they weren’t cops. Really, we were just ignored.” The Burlington Police Department, Town of Elon Police and Campus Safety and Police have no record of a call to 518 Lebanon Avenue and had no explanation why no officer was sent to investigate the call.
