Monarch Butterflies expected to become endangered in 50 years due to temperature A study in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” released this week reports that an expected change in climate in Mexico may cause Monarch Butterflies to become an endangered species, according to CNN. In the winter, monarchs travel south to spend the winter in a mountain forest outside of Mexico City. The Associated Press reports that the climate in this refuge is expected to become too wet and cold in the next half-century, leaving the monarchs with nowhere safe to spend the winter. The monarch butterfly is the most common butterfly in North America. According to AP reports, climate experts said that extinction of the monarch butterfly depends on their ability to adapt to the changing weather or find a new place to migrate to in the winter. These experts also said other animals may be in danger of becoming extinct because of the increase in global temperatures over the next 50 years.
