» -Q" SENATE. IIEV/S Since the middle of March the legislative branch of our Student Government has been quite busy handing out money for Union Improvemerrts, tennis court renovation, dances, the Liberal Arts Forum, and the literary macazine. Senator Sally McDuffie introduced Senate Bill 63“3*2 v/hich called for an appropriation of $lf0.00 to redecorate the Student Union by placing pictures and pennants on the v/alls. This v;ill be carried out next year by the Development Committee. Another bill (S. B. 63-3.3) called for appropriations totaling. $l,i00.00 for dances on March 30 and April 20. The college literary magazine. The Colonnades, was the recipicant of $100 as a result of a bill introduced by Senator Melvin S>hreves. This money v/ill go to cover the unexpected cost of the magazine. At a poll taken on April 2^, the Student Body voiced their approval of a ^1,000. appropriation for the renovation of the college tennis courts. The bill was written by Ex-president James A. Buie. Another $525* was appropriated to the Liberal Arts Forum to acquire Harry Golden for their program. This bill was written by Ex-president ir.Buie and introduced by Ex-senator Bob Saundeis. The final piece of legislation to be acted on by the Senate v/as a resolution of admiration and appreciation to the Es-sonato speaker, G. Si/uder;t Aft a j r s Corvi )v iHtc£ A call meeting on Friday, iiarch 7, reviev/ed the report of the sub committee on rooms and hours to be specified for night study sessions for students. The lecture room A-2-1 was designated for individual study, and 10^ Alamance was designated for group discussion. Mr, Gwaltney consulted Dr. Danieley after the call meeting and reported on March 18 that Dr. Danieley suggested one room be provided viith ash trays. •Questions were raised by Mr. Hassell on the mechanics involving the letter to new students on the Honor System. Should it be a part of the admissions policy or should it be part of the information going out to students? Mr. Graves then recommended that acceptance of the Honor System be made a required part of the admissions policy with a letter of explanation on the Honor System included v;ith other information on the College. The Committee also recommended that Mr. Biddle write a bill for the Student Senate v/hereby 6.c.ch student in day school should sign a pledge to uphold the Honor System. The Committee then discussed student-complaints about charges for repairs in dormitories, and Mrs. Epperson stated that there is a list of standard charges for certain repairs. The discussion them centered on the problem of the return of room keys to the Business Office at the end of each semester. A motion was made by Mrs. Epperson that we recommend to the Business Office that the deposit on room keys be raised next year to five dollars and that May 22 to noon May 25 be designated as days on which students may return keys. She also urged that the matter be v;ell published. Mr. Biddle seconded the motion, and the Committee unanimously approved. The Committee discussed at length the extensive cost involved for girls taking part in the May Court. Mrs. Epperson v/as asked to talk v;ith Mrs. Griffin about the matter. Further discussion concerned care of furniture and buildings (apropos of the cigarette burns on the gymnasium floor after the previous Saturday night's dance), the loose tile at the door of the Student Union (to be reported to Dr. Danieley), and the need for having the stobs and wires around grassed areas checked. April 1, 1963 After reading a communication from Dr. Danieley v;hich called our attention to the burning of shrubbery near McEwen Saturday, March 30, the Committee discussed the fact that many outsiders had attended the dance and o.pparently proper procedure had not oeen folloired by the Dance Comnittee. A motion vic.g made that Bob Gwaltney speak to the chairman of the Entertainment Committee concerning handling dances for the rest of this year.
